Sennheiser Headphones & Earphones

Sitting at the same table as brands like Bose and Audio-Technica, Sennheiser is one of the more prestigious and respected brand in the audio electronics field.

One of the few major audio companies to not be based in Asia or America, Sennheiser was founded in Germany and still has its headquarters and some of its factories there. Sennheiser manufactures and sells headphones, earphones, microphones, speakers and amplifiers, among other audio products.

A brief history

Sennheiser was founded as ‘Lab W’ just after the Second World War, by a group of eight engineers from the University of Hannover. Their first product was a voltmeter, but their venture into audio equipment quickly began in 1946 with the company’s first microphone, the DM1.

From there the company expanded into geophysical equipment, microphone transformers, mixers and miniature magnetic headphones. Lab W was renamed as Sennheiser Electronic in 1958, and released its first pair of open headphones in 1968. Not only was it a first for the company, but it was a first for the world, as those headphones, the HD 414, remain the bestselling headphones of all time.

In 1982, Sennheiser began its manufacturing and production of wireless microphones, and in 1987 earned an Academy Award for its MKH 816 shotgun microphone. Over the following years, the company opened branches in France (1988), Ireland and the United Kingdom (1990), and the United States (1991).

Sennheiser also received an Emmy Award in 1996 for its RF wireless technology, and in the same year became a private limited company. Sennheiser has done nothing but improve and expand since then, and exists today as a benchmark of quality in the audio electrics field.

Testament to that, is the fact that the brand earned Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customers award in our 2020 headphones ratings, after consumers rated it five stars for sound quality, practicality, comfort, design, value for money and overall satisfaction.
