Air conditioner installation: Don’t try this at home

Air conditioners may be expensive to buy, but they are priceless on a hot Australian summer’s day. However, when it comes to the point of purchase, it’s easy to get carried away and try to save some money by going it alone with the installation. This is a bad idea, and you’ll find out why in this report.

We get it, installation seems like an expensive add-on to an already expensive appliance. Depending on the type of air conditioner you buy (split systems are the most common), installation is a little more complex than simply plugging in a new fridge, for example.

You have to set up both the inside unit, and the outside compressor, and this is best left to the professionals. There are many different factors at play when it comes to air con installation, which should be undertaken by a qualified HVAC electrician. They will know what’s best for your home in regards to:

  • Whether the existing wiring in your home is appropriate to handle your chosen system. If it’s an old home, it’s possible that wiring may be worn or inadequate for modern air conditioners – you don’t want to short out your electricity!
  • Where to place the compressor outside. It is best left out of the harsh Australian sun, and a good electrician will know where to install it for the most efficient and least intrusive operation.
  • Where to install the outlets inside your home. This is not only a practicality issue but a safety one.
  • Whether ducted air conditioning is practical for your home, or budget. Installing ducted air conditioning is no mean feat. It is a labour-intensive and costly procedure, on top of the cost of the cost of the unit itself.

Professional (and licensed) installation is the best way to make sure your unit is installed correctly, and safely. On top of this, many air conditioning warranties require professional installation, otherwise they will be invalid. Going the DIY route could void the warranty and leave you out of pocket should any repairs be needed.

Air conditioners are a great way to keep cool in the harsh Australian summers. They are not without their downfalls, however – the major ones being they are costly to run and purchase. A professional installation from a licensed HVAC electrician ensures optimal placement of the unit, and safe installation to keep you and your family safe.
