As the winner of our customer satisfaction awards for both headphone and earphone awards in 2015, Bose is obviously doing something right. The company is one of the most well-known in its field and is renowned for the quality of its products.
While the Bose brand is polarising in audiophile circles, its products are generally well received by the general public and the company has stayed strong over its 52 years.
A brief history
The Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by Amar G. Bose, a former graduate student at MIT. He founded the company eight years after he began research into reverberant sound and audio quality, which was prompted by the disappointing purchase of an under-performing stereo system.
His research examined the various factors that were limiting the high-end audio systems of the day, which in his eyes were mainly to do with the physics and spatial properties of sound, and the failure to consider the human body as part of any given sound system. As mentioned, Bose was founded eight years after his research began, and the company’s purpose was to achieve “Better Sound Through Research”, a phrase which has since become the brand’s motto.
Research continued for many years, until the Model 901 was debuted in 1968, becoming an instant commercial success. This led to rapid growth of the brand throughout the 1970s and beyond. Bose opened its first store in 1993, with the best part of 200 more to follow both in the US and internationally. Amar Bose remained Bose chairman and primary stockholder until 2011, when he donated the majority of the company’s shares to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
