Australian dishwashers a shoe-in for handiest home appliance
Our latest survey results show that many Australians get the most out of their dishwasher by using their machine for tasks other than washing up dirty dishes … such as cleaning their shoes.
Two in five Australians elected to use their dishwasher to clean items such as pans, baking trays, sponges, toothbrushes and sports shoes. Oddly, more males than females thought to use their dishwashers for ‘extracurricular’ cleaning (43% versus 38%), and younger respondents were more likely to do this than older respondents (56% versus 32%).
Furthermore, many of our respondents understood how to perform basic maintenance on their dishwasher to ensure it operated at its peak. Notably, more than three quarters of Queensland and Victorian respondents were handy with dishwasher maintenance, while New South Welshmen were less so (only 63%).
Our survey also found that customers of Miele dishwashers were most satisfied with their brand overall. This earned Miele our dishwashers award for 2012 ahead of Bosch, LG, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool.
In other results, Bosch received a five star rating for value for money, while Miele had a clean sweep of five star ratings for performance, reliability, noise, internal layout and warranty and service.
Our results also showed that dishes are causing trouble in paradise, with nearly one in five respondents citing disagreements over household chores as the biggest issue in their relationship. This was more apparent in Generation Y respondents (28% listed this as their relationship’s biggest hurdle) while only 9% of Baby Boomers felt the same.
We also found that 74% of female respondents believed they were best in the household at loading their dishwasher when compared to 68% of males.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers who have bought a dishwasher within the survey group – in this case, 675 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased and used a dishwasher in the last 3 years. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Miele led the other brands rated with five stars for overall customer satisfaction with their washing machines. Next were Bosch, LG, Fisher & Paykel and Westinghouse with four stars; and Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool with three.
Value for money
Bosch customers were most satisfied that their dishwasher offered value for money, with the German brand achieving five stars for this criteria. Bosch were followed by Miele, LG and Westinghouse with four stars; and Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool with three.
Performance (i.e. effectiveness in cleaning dishes)
Miele received another five stars for the performance and effectiveness of their dishwashers, ahead of four star recipients Bosch, LG, Fisher & Paykel and Westinghouse. Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool each received three stars for this criteria.
For the reliability of their dishwashers, Miele received five stars for this criteria. Not far behind were Bosch with four stars; and LG, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool with three.
Noise while operating
Since it’s right in the middle of the house, a good dishwasher usually won’t make too much racket when everyone is settling down for the night. For the noise level of their dishwashers, Miele received five stars for this criteria. They were followed by four star recipient Bosch and three star recipients LG, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool.
Internal layout of the drawers
Getting more out of your dishwasher’s drawers means not having to do extra washing up in the sink, which is arguably a dishwasher’s biggest selling point. Miele customers were most satisfied with their dishwasher’s internal layout, earning them five stars. They were followed by Bosch, LG, Fisher & Paykel and Westinghouse with four stars; and Electrolux, Dishlex and Whirlpool with three.
