Car maintenance a labour of ‘love and savings’ for one in three drivers
Whether it was a good car wash or an oil change, a third of Australian drivers told us in our recent survey that they preferred to save money and handle the hard work of car maintenance themselves.
This proved especially true of men – 39% of whom did their own car maintenance in comparison to 22% of women. Male respondents were also more likely than women (32% compared to 20%) to work on their car at least once a fortnight.
This love of car maintenance saw one in five of our survey respondents visit an auto store every month, and the same number were reportedly always thinking about the next product to buy from their car accessories and parts retailer.
Auto stores weren’t just for restocking on parts either. A significant 71% of respondents found staff to be knowledgeable and helpful when it came to their vehicle, and 45% found the fitting services offered by these stores to be a convenient way to take the hassle out of changing car parts themselves.
It would seem that an auto store should be the first pit stop for any drivers taking car maintenance into their own hands, and one in particular made it to the top of our list in terms of customer satisfaction. Supercheap Auto has received our most satisfied customers award for auto stores ahead of Auto One, Autobarn and Repco.
Our award-winning brand, Supercheap Auto, received five stars for overall satisfaction value for money, online presence (including store and catalogue), range of products and the convenience of the store location.
In other ratings, Repco received five stars for the knowledge of its staff, and Auto One received five stars for service, staff knowledge and the convenience of the store location.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of auto stores within the survey group – in this case, 1,177 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased a product from an auto store in the last 12 months.
Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall customer satisfaction
Supercheap Auto received five stars for overall customer satisfaction in this category; outdoing Auto One’s four star rating, and Autobarn and Repco with three.
Value for money
Supercheap Auto notched up another five star rating, this time for value for money. Autobarn, Repco and Auto One all followed with four stars.
Auto One took out the top spot for its service, followed by four star recipients Supercheap Auto, Repco and Autobarn.
Knowledge of staff
Most auto store staff are more than happy to offer any advice they can to customers in the process of ‘pimping their ride’. Customers of both Auto One and Repco were most satisfied with the motoring and auto-repair knowledge of staff members at their local auto store. Each brand received five stars here, followed by Autobarn with four and Supercheap Auto with three.
Online presence including store and catalogue
Most retailers nowadays have an online offering for customers, and the auto store industry is no exception. Supercheap Auto’s online presence earned it a five star satisfaction rating, with Auto One coming next with four. Autobarn and Repco each received three stars for online presence.
Range of products
Cars are complex machines – especially so nowadays – and good auto stores cater for this with a wide range of products for every kind of vehicle. Supercheap Auto received a five star rating for its range of products, followed by Repco, Autobarn and Auto One with four stars each.
Convenience of store location
Tied for the five star spot were Auto One and Supercheap Auto – each receiving top ratings for the convenience of their store locations. Autobarn and Repco were next in line with four star ratings for convenience.
