More than a quarter of Australian drivers don’t know “jack” about changing car tyres

Most Satisfied Customers: Car Tyre Retailers - 2012We may be a nation that loves our V8 Supercars and roaring engines, but some of the respondents to our recent survey have admitted to a bit of a blind spot in their motoring knowledge – they know nothing about changing car tyres. In fact:

  • 28% of respondents do not know how to change a flat tyre, and
  • 30% have called for roadside assistance to change a car tyre for them.

When it came to the differences between genders, more than half of the women surveyed (58%) did know how to change a flat tyre … although male respondents were much more likely than their female counterparts to know their way around a car jack and tyre iron (84%).

Choosing a new set of tyres can be one of the most important aspects of maintaining your vehicle, and our survey of car tyre retailers can help you decide on the best one for you.

Bob Janes T-Marts received our most satisfied customers award for car tyre retailers, topping the ratings with five star ratings in seven out of the eight rated criteria.

Beaurepaires, Kmart Tyre & Auto Service, Goodyear and Tyrepower were also rated in these results.

In other five star ratings:

  • Tyrepower earned a five star rating for value for money, point of sale service, speed of tyre fittings and tyre quality.
  • Goodyear received five stars for point of sale and after sale service, and
  • Kmart Tyre & Auto Service achieved five star ratings for value for money and the convenience of their store locations.

Our results were particularly interesting when it came to our younger and older respondents. Thirty nine percent of Generation Y’s declared they had let their car tyres run down to unsafe levels before they considered replacing them (compared to only 14% of Baby Boomers).

The same proportion of Generation Y’s admitted they did not check the condition of their car tyres before a long trip, compared to just nine percent of Baby Boomers.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of car tyre retailers within the survey group – in this case, 1,138 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased car tyres from a car tyre retailer in the last 3 years.

Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.

Overall customer satisfaction

Well-known Australian car tyre retailer Bob Jane T-Marts received a five star rating for overall customer satisfaction in this category just nudging out Tyrepower and Goodyear with four stars, and Kmart Tyre & Auto Service and Beaurepaires with three.

Value for money

Getting more for your money could mean a cheaper set of tyres, or a reasonable price for a tyre rotation service. Tyrepower, Bob Jane T-Marts and Kmart Tyre & Auto Service all received five star ratings for car tyre retailer value for money. Goodyear received four for its value offerings, followed by Beaurepaires with three.

Range of tyre brands available

Different tyre brands suit different types of cars, so a wider range can mean all the difference when it comes to finding the best car tyres for your vehicle. Bob Jane T-Marts achieved a five star rating for its range of tyre brands available, followed by four star recipients Tyrepower and Goodyear, then Kmart Tyre & Auto Service and Beaurepaires with three.

Point of sale service

Customers of Tyrepower, Bob Jane T-Marts and Goodyear were most satisfied with the point of sale service they received from their retailer. These brands took out five star ratings, and were followed by Beaurepaires with four and Kmart Tyre & Auto Service with three.

After sale service

Both Bob Jane T-Marts and Goodyear received five stars for after sale service, with Tyrepower following with four and Beaurepaires and Kmart Tyre & Auto Service with three.

Speed of fitting tyres

No one wants to be without their car any longer than necessary, with customers of Tyrepower and Bob Jane T-Marts most satisfied with the speed that new tyres were fitted to their cars. Following these five star achievers were Goodyear and Beaurepaires with four stars each, then Kmart Tyre & Auto Service with three.

Quality of tyres

Good car tyres hold up to punishment for years at a time, but they should also offer superior fuel economy and handling in the process. Both Bob Jane T-Marts and Tyrepower earned five stars for the quality of their tyres, with Goodyear and Beaurepaires coming close behind with four stars each. Kmart Tyre & Auto Service received three stars for tyre quality.

Convenience of store location

Kmart Tyre & Auto Service achieved a five star rating for the convenience of its store locations across the country. Beaurepaires, Bob Jane T-Marts and Tyrepower all received four stars for convenience, and Goodyear received three.
