What a load of garbage: 1 in 2 Australians throw away food every week

Most Satisfied Customers - Refrigerators 2013It’s important for every household to get the most from the food they buy each week. However, the results of our recent survey show that half our respondents regularly remove mouldy leftovers from their fridge, and a similar number throw away food from their fridge every week (45%).

This aligns with recently produced evidence from not-for-profit DoSomething, which states that Australians throw out $8 billion dollars worth of edible food every year. The average household stands to save more than $1,000 each year if they don’t throw out this food.

These facts are especially interesting, considering that three quarters of our respondents are savvy enough to know exactly how long defrosted meat can stay in the fridge before it expires.

LG and Samsung achieve fridge customer satisfaction awards in 2013

Having reviewed their shopping experience in this survey, we can also reveal what consumers think about their new refrigerator.

Purchases didn’t necessarily come down to price (only 18% buy a fridge because it’s the cheapest) or unique features (27% bought based on a special feature). One thing more consumers take into account is energy efficiency: 79% check the energy rating of their potential purchase before they buy.

You can make a more informed purchasing decision by using our latest customer satisfaction ratings to choose your next fridge. This year, LG and Samsung both received our Most Satisfied Customers Award – Refrigerators. Taking a closer look at our award-winners:

  • LG received five stars for overall satisfaction, performance and reliability, after sale service, design and energy efficiency.
  • Samsung achieved its five stars in the areas of overall satisfaction, value for money, internal layout, quality of fittings and fixtures, and design.

Many of our rated brands – Kelvinator, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux and Whirlpool – also received five star ratings in various criteria. We have also provided a more definitive breakdown of these results.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have bought a new refrigerator in the last three years – in this case, 858 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.

Overall customer satisfaction

A fridge is a long-term investment for your household, so make sure you choose a model that has been given the nod by Australian consumers. LG and Samsung received five stars each for overall customer satisfaction in this category. Kelvinator, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel and Electrolux came next with four, and Whirlpool finished with three.

Value for money

Are shoppers getting the best value for money from their new refrigerator purchase? Customers of Samsung refrigerators were most satisfied with the value for money of their new fridge. LG, Kelvinator, Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel each received four stars for value for money, and Electrolux and Whirlpool achieved three.

Performance and reliability

Every fridge needs to be a reliable household fixture all year round. LG, Kelvinator and Westinghouse each received five star ratings for refrigerator performance and reliability. Samsung, Fisher & Paykel and Electrolux followed with four stars, and Whirlpool finished with three.

After sale service and warranty

Make sure your kitchen appliances continue to run at their best by ensuring your purchases have a sterling reputation for after sale service. Both Westinghouse and LG received five stars in this area, and were followed by Samsung, Kelvinator, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux and Whirlpool with four star ratings.

Internal layout, including storage space

Nearly two thirds of survey respondents said they have their own system for loading their fridge. No matter how you choose to load your unit, you’ll need a fridge with the right amount of space for your appetite. Customers of Samsung and Fisher & Paykel were most satisfied with the storage space of their refrigerators. Next with four stars were LG, Kelvinator, Westinghouse and Electrolux, then three star recipients Whirlpool.

Quality of fittings and fixtures (e.g. shelves)

Three brands – Samsung, Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel – received five stars for the quality of their refrigerator’s fixtures and fittings. They were followed by LG, Kelvinator and Electrolux with four stars each, and then by Whirlpool with three.

Design

A well-designed fridge looks just right in your kitchen. LG, Samsung, Kelvinator and Fisher & Paykel achieved five stars for their design and appearance.  Westinghouse and Electrolux each received four stars in this area, and Whirlpool finished with three.

Energy efficiency

Your fridge is always plugged in, but that doesn’t mean it has to cost you a bundle in bills! LG received five stars for the energy efficiency of its refrigerators. Samsung, Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel followed with four star ratings; Kelvinator, Electrolux and Whirlpool all received three.
