Powdered laundry detergent is a convenient long-term option for getting beautifully clean clothes time and time again. You can buy it in large quantities and store it away knowing it’ll be useable for months afterwards, and it’s often more concentrated than equivalent liquid products. In order to decide which laundry powder brand is providing the best overall product, we’ve tracked the satisfaction of thousands of Aussie customers in areas such as value, environmental friendliness, cleaning quality and more.

We’ve found that ALDI Almat washing powder was the highest-scoring in overall satisfaction, securing our maximum five star rating to be awarded our Most Satisfied Customers Award – Laundry Powder. The supermarket chain also achieved a four-star rating for their Trimat detergent brand, with other brands Radiant, Biozet Attack and Earth Choice doing well to achieve the same rating – the latter won our award for Liquid Detergent. Behind them came three-star ratings for Omo, Fab, Dynamo, Cold Power, Surf and Duo.

Several brands also topped the scores in individual criteria – see how they went in our comparison.

Value for money

Our research showed that Aussies spend an average of just over $12 when they buy laundry detergent, but the frequency we go through it means that small differences in value can have a big impact in the long run. Overall winner ALDI Almat was the best value product on the market according to the customers we talked to, scoring five stars to beat likes of four-star achievers Earth Choice, Radiant, Biozet Attack, Fab, Duo and other ALDI brand, Trimat.

Quality of clean

The effectiveness of your laundry detergent is pretty much its most important characteristic, so it was unsurprising that our eleven surveyed brands performed consistently well here. ALDI Almat and Radiant shared the five-star honours, with customers being most satisfied with the quality of cleaning they provided. All but three other brands secured impressive four-star ratings, suggesting there are a range of good products on the market besides the aforementioned winners; Dynamo, Surf and Duo were behind the rest with three-star cleaning ratings.

Number of washes

Even if you’ve payed bottom dollar for a big box of washing powder, it won’t do you much good if you have to use it up quickly. The number of washes you get from a box of laundry detergents depends on factors such as the concentration, chemicals used and of course, how much you bought, so buying a massive container of your favourite product won’t always guarantee it lasts for ages. ALDI dominated the long-lasting laundry stakes, with both their Almat and Trimat brands securing five stars. Six other brands were next with four stars – Earth Choice, Radiant, Biozet Attack, Fab, Omo and Duo – with the remainder achieving three.

Environmental friendliness

Harsh, non-biodegradable chemicals in cleaning products are mostly thing of the past, with manufacturers recognising the need to provide safe products to their customers. Most brands are now a lot more benign in the environment stakes; unsurprisingly though, it was Earth Choice which claimed a five-star victory here. Further good results were recorded by both ALDI brands, Radiant and Biozet, each of which achieved four-star satisfaction ratings for their lack of environmental impact; the remaining brands had three-star ratings.

Nobody wants their clothes to come out of the wash smelling worse than they went in, which is why most companies make sure their laundry detergent has a nice, appealing scent. The Aussies we surveyed were most satisfied with the smell of Radiant and Fab, with the two scoring five stars. The four-star achievers consisted of both ALDI brands in addition to Earth Choice, Surf, Omo and Biozet, whilst the remaining brands finished with three stars.

Feel of clothes after wash

Like the smell factor above, the feel of your clothes following a washing cycle is another tangible outcome which speaks volumes about the quality and effectiveness of your chosen laundry detergent. Satisfaction results were fairly consistent again in this area, with Radiant achieving the five-star rating and all but three other brands scoring four stars; the remaining three-star rated brands were Dynamo, Surf and Duo.

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and used laundry detergent in the last 3 months – in this case, 1,392 Australians.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
