Aussie men and women service their own cars to save cash

In an effort to save money, one third of Australians have been getting their hands dirty by performing basic servicing duties on their own cars, according to our latest survey.
But the big surprise came from our female respondents - more than a quarter of whom defied gender stereotypes by taking care of basic car maintenance themselves.
Perhaps less shocking is that a substantial 38% of male respondents were inclined to look after their own vehicles by performing tasks such as changing engine oil or replacing filters.
For those Aussie motorists without the technical know-how (or the time), Ultra Tune showed some serious skills under the bonnet in our survey. The Australian-owned brand received five stars across all criteria and our most satisfied customers award for car servicing.
Ultra Tune was rated alongside Kmart Tyre & Auto, Goodyear Autocare and Midas.
While Ultra Tune proved a star choice with their customers, other car servicing brands also performed well. Midas received a five star rating for their price, while Kmart Tyre & Auto took out five stars for their cost of parts.
With so many Aussie drivers tending to their own vehicles, we found that nearly two in five respondents were happy to wait until their car exhibited problems before they decided to take it in for a service.
This seems to be less true for older Australians - as Baby Boomers and Generation X drivers were more likely to get their car serviced regularly than Generation Y drivers.
Interestingly, New South Wales drivers were the most likely to avoid servicing their car unless a substantial mechanical problem presented itself (seven percent higher than the national average).
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from car servicing customers within the survey group - in this case, 2,278 people. To qualify, the customer must have had their car serviced in the last two years. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Ultra Tune blew the rest of the competition off the road with five stars for overall satisfaction. Kmart Tyre & Auto, Goodyear Autocare and Midas all received four stars for this criteria – leaving Australian drivers with plenty of options for quality mechanics.
Price of service
Both Midas and Ultra Tune received five stars from their customers for the price of their service, while Kmart Tyre & Auto and Goodyear Autocare received four.
Time taken
Some drivers can struggle when they have to manage without their car even for just one day. Ultra Tune received a high score in this criteria - winning five stars for time taken. Midas, Goodyear Autocare and Kmart Tyre & Auto followed with four stars each.
Cost of any parts required
Cars can be expensive to fix, but a reasonable price can make the process a little less painful. Both Kmart Tyre & Auto and Ultra Tune received five stars for the price of their parts. Midas and Goodyear Autocare were not far behind with four stars each for this criteria.
Warranty of repairs
An assurance that your car will continue to run smoothly for many years can offer many motorists some peace of mind. Ultra Tune received five stars for their warranty, while Kmart Tyre & Auto and Goodyear Autocare received four. Midas received three stars for this criteria.
Effectiveness of repairs
After spending good money, all drivers deserve a car that will remain reliable after repairs are finished. Ultra Tune customers were most satisfied with the effectiveness of their repairs (five stars); while Kmart Tyre & Auto, Goodyear Autocare and Midas all received three stars each.
