electricity for small business

QEnergy Review and Rates

QEnergy is no longer operating. According to the Australian Energy Regulator and the Essential Services Commission, existing QEnergy customers will be transferred to a major retailer as part of the Retailer of Last Resort process. Please treat information below as historical only.

QEnergy is an electricity retailer that operates across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. QEnergy has traditionally specialised in business electricity products, however it also offers a range of products to residential customers.

The company says that it endeavours to be the “best energy provider you have encountered”. It also claims to have some of the cheapest electricity prices and says that being 100 per cent privately owned allows it to provide a wide range of specialised energy retail services.

So does QEnergy live up to its big claims? In this review, Canstar Blue explores QEnergy’s residential electricity plans across the country. We also examine what you can expect to pay with this small retailer. And if you’re wondering, the ‘Q’ in QEnergy apparently stands for ‘Quality’.

QEnergy Plans

QEnergy typically offers one or two residential electricity products across QLD, NSW, VIC and SA. However, the retailer has recently removed its market offers and closed off its plans in NSW, QLD and SA to existing customers only, which is why it’s worth noting that QEnergy does change its products and prices from time to time. Always check the QEnergy website to make sure the deal you’re interested in is still on offer.

QEnergy Residential Products

  • Home Your Way: This is QEnergy’s flagship offer, offering no exit fees, no discounts and reasonable rates.
  • Mini Me: A deal available to Victorian customers, offering competitive variable rates and no exit fees.

Not all offers are available in all areas. Only existing customers in NSW, QLD and SA have access to QEnergy’s offers in these states.

Also be aware that QEnergy often mixes up its market offers. While they are often price-competitive, the retailer has a habit of changing prices more often than most, so things can change quickly. Please use our comparison tool to search for current offers.

QEnergy SmoothPay

SmoothPay gives customers the option to split their bill into twelve equal monthly payments. QEnergy estimates how much electricity your household will use over the coming 12 month and splits your bill up into a predictable payment plan, reducing the likelihood of bill shock. QEnergy monitors your energy usage to ensure your estimated energy usage is accurate. If you’re using less electricity than you were quoted, your monthly payments will be reduced accordingly. However, you will be required to pay extra if you use more energy than QEnergy quoted.

Is QEnergy right for me?

QEnergy’s electricity deals are relatively straightforward, often offering strong value without the need for sometimes confusing discounts. QEnergy typically has some of the cheapest electricity prices in most states, though keep in mind that QEnergy has a tendency to periodically adjust its prices and products, so be sure to keep a close eye out for any changes that could affect you. Regularly compare electricity retailers to ensure you continue to receive a competitive price for power.
