They say dogs are man’s best friend, but for those people with facial hair, electric shavers run them pretty close! Our research shows that the majority of Australian men and women do not enjoy shaving, but then again, they also say that a man is only as good as his tools…
It seems many Australians are battling along with old, tired shavers – all the while complaining, but doing nothing about it. We found that 34% of adults suffer with irritated skin after shaving, particularly women, while 38% admit they have never found a razor that really works for them. And only 33% of both men and women actually enjoy shaving.
Some fella called Albert Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. So if you find the thought of shaving to be a bit ‘hair raising’ or you often suffer with irritable skin, you could a) stay barking mad (another dog reference, get it?) or b) do something about it! If the second option takes your fancy, you’ll be interested in the results of our customer satisfaction ratings for electric shavers.
To find out which brand Australians rate highest, we asked more than 500 men and women to tell us about their experiences with the electric shavers they’ve purchased within the last two years. After collating the results, we can announce that Philips stood out from the crowd with five-star ratings in almost every category, including ease of use, performance, value for money and overall customer satisfaction.
Some people are happy to get by with cheap, disposable razors (and probably complain about irritable skin) but for others, electric shavers are not only kinder to their body, but they’re also pretty darn convenient. So how much do they cost? At the premium end of the spectrum, you could spend the best part of $500 on a top of the line electric shaver – the kind with precision blades that gently position each and every hair into the perfect cutting position and come with various settings for quicker or gentler results. These top end electric shavers generally promises great results with fewer strokes and less effort required. On the other hand, you could pick up a perfectly capable electric shaver for as little as $30. Our survey found that consumers spent an average of $121 on their electric shavers, which suggests there are a decent number of people buying from both ends of the market. Men ($127) spent more on average than women ($110) and adults aged in their 40s ($139) were found to be the biggest spenders.
Electric shavers fall into two main categories – rotary shavers and foil shavers. It’s a good idea to consider which type would be best for your skin and shaving routine, so here are the basics on both types.
Ultimately it’s all down to personal preference, but before making a decision, consider how you would like to grow your facial hair and whether or not you have sensitive skin.
Unless you are prone to changing your style of facial hair, it’s easy to fall into ‘auto-pilot’ when shaving, particularly if you do it every day. So it makes sense that you’d want an electric shaver that delivers consistent results every time you use it. Our research found consistency (30%) was the most significant driver of overall customer satisfaction, followed closely by value for money (26%) and performance (19%).
Are you the type of man who shaves because you simply hate that horrible, prickly feeling on your face, or do you take pride in sculpting your facial hair, to perhaps attract the attention of the ladies…? Our findings show that just 32% of men take care sculpting their facial hair, while 16% look to celebrities for facial hair inspiration and just 17% think their facial hair is their best feature. We found that generally, younger men take more care with their facial hair but overall, the numbers don’t look great for the ladies. Oh and, by the way, half of the women surveyed (50%) said they find men with facial hair attractive. So you might want to put a bit more effort in.
Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and used an electric shaver in the last two years – in this case, 555 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.

Braun is a German consumer products brand, now a wholly owned subsidiary of multinational corporation Procter & Gamble, which also owns Gillette. It produces a wide range of grooming products and small appliances and earned our award for electric shavers in 2014.
Panasonic is a Japanese multinational electronics corporation that specialises in both large and small household appliances, including TVs and air conditioners. It also produces a large range of personal care products such as hair straighteners, beard trimmers and electric shavers.
Remington Products, also known simply as Remington, is a well-known personal care company that manufacturers a large range of grooming appliances for both men and women, including electric shavers, hair dryers and hair straighteners. It also specialises in hair removal.
