Most Satisfied Customers | Avon

Having previously won Canstar Blue awards for sunscreen, Avon has received our inaugural Most Satisfied Customers Award – Foundation.

Do Australians spend too much on make-up?

The average Australian, according to the latest Canstar Blue research, spends less than $221 on make-up annually; a reasonable cost when compared to what many Australians pay for either alcohol ($118) or takeaway coffee (roughly $125) each month.

And yet, a little more than one in five tell us they spend too much on make-up. This proportion climbs to 33% when we ask the youth of Australia (i.e. Generation Y respondents).

Is it possible that people feel they overspend because many fail to shop around for well-priced items? Perhaps, with close to a third of respondents admitting they stick religiously to a single brand.

No matter which product they buy, however, many Australians (71%) say they check their make-up hasn’t been tested on animals.

Avon shakes the foundations of our latest awards

More than two in five respondents cannot leave the house without first applying make-up and a similar number feel self-conscious if others see them without it.

While we at Canstar Blue think you look fantastic just the way you are, we have rated foundation brands in our latest round of ratings, for those days when you need that extra “wow” factor.

For that, Avon’s got you covered. Having previously won Canstar Blue awards for sunscreen, Avon has received our inaugural Most Satisfied Customers Award – Foundation. The company did so at the head of a bevy of stunning competitors: MAC Cosmetics, Clinique, Covergirl, Estee Lauder, Rimmel, Nude, Revlon, Maybelline and L’Oreal.

Avon proved it had the right stuff for our award, securing many five-star ratings in these results. Let’s take a look at exactly where they did well.

Overall customer satisfaction

Avon achieved five stars for overall satisfaction, ahead of four-star recipients MAC Cosmetics, Clinique, Covergirl and Estee Lauder. Closing with three were Rimmel, Nude, Revlon, Maybelline and L’Oreal.

Value for money

While the average Australian doesn’t spend too much on make-up each year, there’s no need to throw money down the drain when there are plenty of great value-for-money foundation products available.

Avon once again finished on top, receiving five stars for value for money in our survey. Covergirl, Rimmel, Maybelline and Nude all secured four; Revlon, L’Oreal, Clinique, MAC Cosmetics and Estee Lauder all received three.

Length of time before needing to reapply

American TV stalwart and women’s champion Oprah Winfrey has some sage advice online to help keep your foundation intact for longer:

  • Exfoliate often
  • Don’t over-moisturise, and allow moisturiser to sink in before applying make-up
  • Having less make-up on your face means it is less likely to smudge.

There are more tips in a similar vein in the article, here. We at Canstar Blue, however, went a little further and asked shoppers which foundation goes the distance before needing to be reapplied.

At the top of the list is MAC Cosmetics, whose customers were most satisfied with the length of time their foundation lasted before needing reapplication. Following with four stars each were Estee Lauder, Nude, Rimmel, Avon, Covergirl, Clinique and Revlon; while the three-star recipients were L’Oreal and Maybelline.

Colour match to your skin

It’s not always easy to match your foundation to the colour of your skin but certain products and brands can help. MAC Cosmetics achieved another five-star rating in these results, this time for its ability to blend with skintone. This brand stayed ahead of four-star recipients Nude, Clinique, Estee Lauder and Avon, as well as three-star recipients Revlon, Maybelline, Rimmel, Covergirl and L’Oreal.

Skin reactions (e.g. pimples)

Three rated brands excelled for how their respective products caused no skin reactions – Estee Lauder, Clinique and Avon. Each of these received a five-star rating.

They were followed by four-star achievers MAC Cosmetics, L’Oreal, Covergirl, Maybelline, Revlon and Rimmel, with Nude taking three stars.

Amount of skin coverage

Foundation that provides complete skin coverage can boost your confidence and turn heads. Avon received five stars for its foundation products’ coverage. MAC Cosmetics, Estee Lauder, Covergirl, Rimmel, Revlon, Clinique and Maybelline all received four stars in this area, with Nude and L’Oreal both coming next with three.

Quality of texture

Customers of Avon, MAC Cosmetics and Estee Lauder were most satisfied overall with the quality of their foundation’s texture (i.e. how smooth or even it was). Next with four stars were Clinique, Covergirl, Rimmel, Nude and Revlon. Three-star recipients in this category were Maybelline and L’Oreal.

Naturalness of look

It’s a little ironic how many of us seek out products to give us a “natural” look, i.e. the appearance of someone not wearing anymake-up at all. In that regard, we have some brands you should consider.

Aptly-named Nude achieved our top rating for the naturalness of its look, and was followed by a host of four-star recipients: Avon, MAC Cosmetics, Estee Lauder, Rimmel, Clinique and Covergirl. Revlon, Maybelline and L’Oreal all finished these results with three stars each for foundation “naturalness”.

Frequently asked questions

anstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from shoppers within the survey group who have purchased and used makeup foundation in the last three months – in this case, 828 men and women.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
