Australians are paying a significant price for their good looks/locks, according to the responses from our latest survey of hairdressing salon customers. These Australians apparently spend an average of $59 per visit to the hairdresser, with men tending to spend less per trip than women ($36 versus $72).
While some may see this as a substantial outlay, it’s not too steep a price to pay when you’re happy with the result. Indeed, three in five are reportedly loyal to their hair salon, and three in five of those keep coming back for a simple reason: their hairdresser does a great job. Other reasons include
However, some salons may be missing the mark when it comes to customer satisfaction. A quarter of surveyed customers admit, “Yes, I’ve cried after a visit to a hair salon.” This comprised of 32% of our female respondents, and eight percent of male respondents.
N.B. Our survey could not determine whether these customers had cried out of joy or disappointment.

The well-known chain performed exceptionally well in these results, achieving top ratings in nearly all the survey criteria. It did so amidst healthy competition from both Just Cuts and Price Attack.

Overall customer satisfaction
By comparing several brands against one another, you’ll have a better chance at finding a hairdressing salon you can return to for years to come. TONI&GUY achieved a five star rating for overall satisfaction. Just Cuts received four, and Price Attack followed with three.
Value for money
Hairdressers offer a variety of services to their patrons, and it’s not surprising that these customers want the best value possible. Just Cuts achieved a five star rating for value for money, and was followed by four star recipient Price Attack, then three star recipient TONI&GUY.
Advice on style, colour etc.
Some walk into their hairdressers with a clear vision of how they want to look when they walk out. Others are absolutely clueless. In either event, you’ll likely need some good advice to determine what will work for you. TONI&GUY achieved five stars for such advice, edging ahead of four star recipients Price Attack and Just Cuts.
Quality of cut, colour etc.
Unsurprisingly, a good haircut can greatly influence a customer’s decision to return. TONI&GUY customers were most satisfied with the quality of their haircut, colouring, beauty treatment, etc. Following our five star recipient were Price Attack and Just Cuts with four stars each.
Customer service (e.g. reliability of appointment times, customer service)
Are you looking for a salon that offers punctual appointments; one where staff are happy to chat with you while you get your monthly haircut? TONI&GUY led in this area with a five star rating for customer service. Just Cuts received four stars, and Price Attack received three.
Range of products available to purchase
You may find that supermarket hairdressing supplies fall a little short when it comes to your particular hair care needs. This is where a good salon can help, offering a variety of products in-store. TONI&GUY customers were most satisfied with the range of products available. The brand received five stars, and was followed by four star recipient Price Attack and three star achiever Just Cuts.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have visited a hairdressing salon chain in the last 12 months (i.e. one with salons in multiple locations) – in this case, 731 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
