The man behind a woman’s brand
In 1886, struggling door-to-door salesman David McConnell realised his customers – New York housewives – were more interested in his free perfume samples than the books he was selling. So he began making his own perfumes and selling them instead.
The California Perfume Company soon grew, because McConnell appointed female sales representatives. This was a revolutionary approach, in a time when the job options for women were limited to cleaning, farming, or manufacture, and only 20% of American women were employed.
McConnell knew that the way women interact with each other one-on-one is vastly different to how they interact with men. Mrs Persis Foster Eames Albee, the first ‘Avon Lady’ representative, personally established Avon’s unique sales method, long before women had the right to vote.
In 1939, the company was renamed ‘Avon’ after McConnell visited Stratford-on-Avon in England and was struck by its beauty. Avon sailed to Australia in 1963, followed by New Zealand in 1978. Thousands of Avon representatives earn a living by selling these products in the two countries and Avon’s market share in the local beauty industry continues to grow.
