With many industry groups warning Australians to exercise caution over gym contracts, prospective fitness club members are making sure they read through their terms and conditions document before joining.
The results of a recent survey results revealed that 77% of respondents take the time to go through their gym contract, with women in particular likely to peruse the fine print compared to men (82% against 71%).
Interestingly, one quarter of respondents said they had purchased a more expensive gym membership option for added flexibility.
Our survey also looked at customer satisfaction ratings for gyms. Jetts have been awarded our most satisfied customers award against Fernwood, Goodlife, Curves and Fitness First gyms.

Jetts scored top marks in many of our criteria, including overall satisfaction, value for money, access, equipment, group fitness, membership flexibility and staff availability. Other five star winners were Fernwood for their equipment and staff availability, and Goodlife for their group fitness options.
The survey also found that it wasn’t just weights that some Aussies were picking up at the gym. One in ten of our respondents had dated someone they met at the gym, with men more than twice as likely as women (15% compared to 6%) to have romanced a fellow gym member.
We also found that nearly half of our respondents preferred to work out with a friend rather than going it alone.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from gym customers within the survey group - in this case, 1,002 people. To qualify, the customer must have regularly visited a commercial gym. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Jetts achieved a five star rating for overall customer satisfaction ahead of all other brands. Fernwood, Goodlife and Curves each received four stars, followed by Fitness First with three.
Value for money
Jetts customers were most satisfied with their gym‘s value for money, earning the Aussie brand five stars. Fernwood, Curves and Goodlife tallied up four stars each; followed by Fitness First with three.
Access
Ideal for round the clock gym workouts, Jetts (the only gym brand open 24 hours a day) received five stars for their access. Next came Fitness First, Goodlife and Fernwood with four stars each; and Curves with three.
Equipment and facilities
Jetts and Fernwood customers were equally satisfied with their gym equipment and facilities – each earning five stars. They were followed by Goodlife, Curves and Fitness First with four stars.
Group fitness
Our results showed that many Aussies preferred to work out with a friend rather than exercise alone. Australian-owned brand Goodlife received five stars for their group fitness options, followed by four star winners Fitness First and Fernwood. Both Jetts and Curves received three stars for this criteria.
Membership flexibility
Customers from Jetts were the most satisfied with the membership flexibility of their gym. Jetts received five stars for this criteria, followed by Fernwood and Curves (whom both offer female-only memberships) with four stars, and then Fitness First and Goodlife with three.
Availability of staff
Gym staff should always be available to offer helpful advice and look out for their safety of members. Fernwood were most satisfied with their gym’s staff availability, earning them five stars. Four stars were allocated to Jetts, Goodlife and Curves for this criteria, followed by Fitness First with three.
