When looking for products to fuel an active lifestyle, the die-hard gym junkies amongst us will usually hit up supplement stores rather than the supermarket. Although there are many benefits to supplement stores, your local supermarket is just as equipped to support your fitness goals – you just need to know where to look!
So for all you gym junkies, health nuts or anyone wanting a healthier trolley at the checkout, make sure you pop some of these on your shopping list, writes Ellie McInerney.
LSA is a super healthy combination of ground linseed (also known as flaxseed), sunflower and almond seeds. This is a smart product to start incorporating into your diet if you’re keen to jump on board the ‘clean eating’ train (once you’ve bought a ticket, found a seat and made yourself comfortable amongst the kale and the green smoothies, I promise you won’t want to get off!)
LSA supports the liver, which is the primary organ that’s working overtime when your body starts detoxing – a natural occurrence when you start making healthier choices. LSA is jam-packed with protein, fibre, omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids plus a ton of vitamins and minerals. Just one or two tablespoons of LSA a day is all you need. You can use it in baking, or my personal favourite is to pop two tablespoons in a smoothie to thicken it up, whilst also adding a nutritional boost. Keep this packet of goodness in the fridge and enjoy daily.
Tahini is a thick, delicious dressing made from ground sesame seeds and is a fantastic source of potassium, iron and magnesium – all of which are critical vitamins and minerals to be consuming, especially whilst training hard. The rich vitamin and mineral content in tahini not only supports healthy cell growth but aids in developing muscle tone while maintaining healthy skin and hair. You can drizzle some of this liquid gold over your salads, in stir-frys or even incorporate it into some home-made muffins or protein balls.
Much like its celebrity best friend kale, quinoa has had a lot of media attention recently. Popular for its versatility and nutty texture, this substitute for rice is low GI (meaning it will keep you fuller for longer) and has an impressive resume of health benefits. Perfect for a post-gym refuel, quinoa is naturally gluten free and has those essential nutrients required for a healthy, active life – potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and Vitamin E just to name a few. It’s also a great source of fibre to help flush out all the toxins your body is trying hard to get rid of.
