Canstar Blue research finalised in July 2016, published in July 2016.
Pharmacies are the one-stop-shop for all your health and cosmetic needs. Whether you’re looking for perfume, makeup, weight-loss supplements, medicine or anything in between – your pharmacy has you covered.
Pharmacies set themselves apart from other retailers by their reputation for knowledge and service. In fact, our research revealed that nearly all shoppers (94%) trust the advice of their pharmacist. It’s perhaps this reason that 83% of Australians prefer to buy their medicine from the pharmacy rather than the supermarket.
There are a number of pharmacy brands competing in Australia, looking to provide differentiation with respect to products, price and services. As part of Canstar Blue’s commitment to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions, we asked shoppers from around the nation what they think about their pharmacy brand. The results of our research once again saw Blooms The Chemist take home the award for Most Satisfied Customers – Pharmacies 2016, rating 5-stars in overall satisfaction, as well as most other criteria.
Other commendable brands include Amcal, Chemmart, Discount Drug Store and Terry White Chemists, with each rating 4-stars in overall satisfaction. Credit also goes Chemist Warehouse, which received five stars in the important ‘Value for Money’ criteria.
We asked Australians what they want from their pharmacy and found the following:
As you can see, while having the lowest price is still top priority for many, it remains important that a pharmacy offers a wide range of products with great customer service. That means if a pharmacy wants to truly impress, it has to perform well across the board.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have made a purchase at a pharmacy in the past 6 months – in this case, 2,619 Australians were surveyed.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
