Accidental spills, and not so accidently dirty shoes, are nigh on unavoidable – no matter how hard you try. Carpets can be great underfoot, but they can also be hard work. Anyone who has ever spent an evening on their hands and knees scrubbing can attest to that!
It all happens in slow motion. From the moment little Susie brings that cup of hot chocolate into the living room, you’re secretly cowering in fear. Then, inevitably, she drops it as you see the substance slowly fall from her hands and seep into the carpet. Nice one, Susie. Next thing you know, you’re rushing to the cupboard under the kitchen sick to grab the carpet cleaner. But is it up to the job?
Carpet cleaners have a habit of disappointing when you need them most, which is why Canstar Blue annually surveys hundreds of adults across Australia to find out how they rate the brand they most recently bought and used. The next time you’re stocking up on home cleaning products, it would be good to know which you can rely on.
Six major brands featured in this year’s results, but only OzKleen was the recipient of a five-star rating for overall customer satisfaction. In addition, it was the only brand to achieve top marks for effectiveness, ease of use and product design – so a standout performer. OzKleen’s carpet cleaner is simply named ‘Carpet Power’. Seems fair.

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and used bathroom cleaner in the last 12 months – in this case, 805 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
Carpet Power is odour-eliminating, and comes in a lavender fragrance. It claims to remove stubborn stains such as coffee, red wine, grease, make-up, dirt and various substances associated with pets. It’s also the only carpet cleaner on Aussie shelves with approval from the Woolsafe Organisation – meaning Carpet Power is safe to use on wool.
The brand which claims cleaning products ‘that actually work’ earned five stars across most research categories, earning four stars for smell and environmental friendliness. However, it was top marks all the way for arguably the most important factors – effectiveness and value for money.
Britex is a powerhouse in all things carpet cleaning. You can not only rent a professional-grade carpet cleaning machine, you can also buy its cleaning products. The specialist company delivers a swag of solutions to see you right through, from the initial carpet soak to the finishing touches. It also has a range of spot stain removers, odour blasters and urine removers. Britex was a solid performer in this review, earning four-stars in all categories except for product design where it scored three stars.
Aussie-owned and made and all-natural Orange Power was a ‘middle of the pack’ performer, rated four-stars for overall satisfaction. It achieved a mixed set of results – mainly threes and fours – but came out with top marks on environmental friendliness, which is course important to a lot of consumers. Natural ingredients are used in Orange Power, including actual orange peel.
With four-stars for overall satisfaction, the fresh food people have performed fairly strongly when it comes to carpet cleaner. Earning four stars in most categories, Woolies earned five stars for smell – where it was the only brand to do so – and value for money. Considering its spray carpet cleaner can be had for under $3, it’s little wonder why many Aussies are opting for this ‘bang for buck’ option.
Freedom – a brand from the huge SC Johnson company – has just one carpet cleaning product named Carpet Foam. It presents a convenient way to clean and deodorise carpet, but Aussie customers did not rate it as a standout. It was a satisfactory performer, earning three stars for overall satisfaction; it also earned three stars in every other category.
Part of the Vanish family of cleaning products, Vanish carpet cleaning offers a three-step solution. There is the power foam, which acts as a deodoriser and freshens up the place. Then it’s the powder solution for a deeper clean to remove tough dirt and dust. After these processes, stains can be removed with the ‘Preen Oxi Action’ spray bottle. While Aussies surveyed were nonplussed overall with three stars for overall satisfaction, Vanish earned four stars for ease of use.
