Most Satisfied Customers | Coles

Nine different brands featured in the results, but only Coles – the supermarket chain’s premium home brand option – earned top marks for overall customer satisfaction.

Coles cleans up with dishwasher detergent award

After a long day, nice home-cooked meal and your first glass of wine, it’s reassuring to know that your dishes are in safe hands with a good dishwasher detergent. But with so many different brands to choose from, how do you know which can be trusted to deliver the sparkling clean results you want? There’s nothing more dissatisfying than opening up your dishwasher and finding a job half done.

So to find out which dishwasher detergents are living up to their squeaky-clean promises, we surveyed more than 1,500 adults who have purchased and used any type in the last six months (tablet, liquid, gel or powder). Nine different brands featured in the results, but only Coles – the supermarket chain’s premium home brand option – earned top marks for overall customer satisfaction. Along with Fairy, it was also the only brand to earn a five-star rating for effectiveness and finish (i.e. it leaves a nice shine and no water spots).

Which dishwasher detergent to buy?

This is only the second time in five years that a supermarket brand has topped our ratings for dishwasher detergents – the other being ALDI back in 2012. The three years in between were dominated by Fairy. Clearly Fairy earned its place at the top of the standings in 2013, 2014 and 2015, but Coles’ success this year comes at a time when more and more consumers are favouring supermarket private labels over home brands. Indeed, our dishwasher detergents survey found that fewer than half of consumers (43%) trust the more expensive brands to give the best results. In fact, 47% of respondents admitted they tend to buy whichever brand is on special and just 51% always buy the same brand.

What drives satisfaction?

We know that price is a big factor when we choose which dishwasher detergent to buy. But when we’re emptying the dishwasher in the morning, what drives our satisfaction with detergent? We found:

  • Effectiveness: 33%
  • Quality of finish: 26%
  • Value for money: 23%
  • Scent: 12%
  • Packaging design: 6%

So while price is important at the point of purchase, consumers ultimately want a dishwasher detergent that delivers quality results. This year Aussies are convinced that Coles offers the best all round proposition.

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and used dishwasher detergent in the last six months – in this case, 1,547 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically.
