The first and biggest telecommunications company in Australia, Telstra has been providing broadband as a commercial product since 1996, when it launched BigPond, its internet provider service. It also has a “budget” broadband service called Belong, which offers month-to-month contracts and lower prices than standard Telstra broadband plans.
Telstra has long dominated the broadband market, with the company’s market share reaching approximately 42% in March 2015. By bundling broadband products with products from Foxtel and streaming service Presto, Telstra is attempting to provide value that can compete with offerings from its key competitors.
Telstra is also launching a new initiative – Telstra Wi-Fi® – which will allow members use their home broadband allowance at more than 3,000 Telstra built Wi-Fi hotspots, at residential hotspots created by other members and at more than 15 million Fon hotspots overseas.
