Nearly a quarter of respondents to our recent survey placed greater importance on a refrigerator’s looks than its functionality when making a final purchasing decision.
Our results showed that male shoppers were more likely than females to favour a fridge because of its appearance, and a substantial number of younger shoppers (close to one third of Gen Y respondents) also prioritised aesthetics over practicality.
Results differed across the country – we found that New South Wales residents were twice as likely as Queensland respondents to be swayed by fridge appearances when making their purchase (28% compared to 14%).
Despite all this, three in every four of our respondents said they choose their refrigerator based on the product’s energy efficiency.
Our survey also rated a wide range of fridge brands, with Kelvinator coming out ahead and winning our most satisfied customers award for refrigerators for 2011.
Westinghouse, Whirlpool, LG, Fisher & Paykel and Samsung were also rated.
Westinghouse shared a five star rating with Kelvinator for food freshness.

Our award-winning brand, Kelvinator, also received five stars for overall customer satisfaction, reliability and quality of fittings.
The survey also revealed that around 30% of our respondents invested in a bar fridge for their homes. Our male respondents were 12% more likely to own a refrigerator for their bar than female respondents.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from refrigerator customers within the survey group - in this case, 809 people. To qualify, the customer must have bought a new refrigerator in the last three years. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Kelvinator received five stars for overall customer satisfaction, and each of our other brands also performed well. Westinghouse, Whirlpool, Fisher & Paykel, LG and Samsung received four stars each for overall satisfaction.
Value for money
Both Kelvinator and Whirlpool received five stars for their value for money. Westinghouse, LG and Samsung all received four stars, while Fisher & Paykel received three.
Reliability
A refrigerator should last for many years without hassle or incident. Kelvinator customers were most satisfied with their refrigerator’s reliability; while Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, LG and Samsung received four stars for theirs. Whirlpool received three stars for this criteria.
Food freshness
Fresh food is one of the hallmarks of a good fridge, and both Kelvinator and Westinghouse received five stars for theirs. Fisher & Paykel, LG and Samsung each received five stars for their fresh-food-appeal, while Whirlpool followed with three.
Internal layout
Fisher & Paykel received five stars for their product’s internal layout. A host of other brands (Westinghouse, Kelvinator, Whirlpool and LG) received four stars, followed closely by Samsung with three.
Quality of fittings
Kelvinator received five stars for the quality of their refrigerator’s fittings (door trim, insulation, handles etc.) Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel received four stars for fitting quality, followed by Whirlpool, LG and Samsung with three.
After sales service
LG and Kelvinator received five stars for most satisfied customers in this criteria, followed by Westinghouse and Samsung with four. Whirlpool and Fisher & Paykel received three stars for their after sales service.
