Our recent survey results show that most Australians aren’t willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of running shoes.
Only 17% of respondents reported that they had spent more than $200 on their last pair of runners. However, men were more likely to spend more than $200 on their sporting footwear when compared to women (21% compared to 14%).
We also found that despite a wide breadth of brands available, a quarter of respondents said they were loyal to one brand of running shoe.
Healthcare professionals suggest that anyone who regularly runs should buy a pair of running shoes with optimal support to help prevent injuries.
Our survey also found that when it came to sports footwear retailers, Athlete’s Foot was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition – earning them our most satisfied customers award in this category.
Amart All Sports, Rebel Sport, Paul’s Warehouse and Foot Locker were also rated.

Athlete’s Foot achieved five star ratings for overall customer satisfaction, range, service and accessories. Australian brands Rebel Sport and Paul’s Warehouse also received five star ratings, for accessories and value for money respectively.
Our results also show that just over a quarter of Australians regularly walk or run on their commute to and from work. This was particularly true of Generation Y, where 41% of respondents took full advantage of the great outdoors compared to 18% of Baby Boomer respondents.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of footwear retailers within the survey group - in this case, 1,009 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased sport footwear from an online or shopfront Australian retailer in the last 12 months. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Athlete’s Foot took the blue ribbon for overall satisfaction, receiving five stars for this criteria. They were followed by Amart All Sports, Rebel Sport and Paul’s Warehouse with four stars each, then Foot Locker with three.
Value for money
Cheap shoes don’t necessarily have to come at the expense of quality. Customers of Paul’s Warehouse were most satisfied with their footwear retailer’s value for money – earning the brand five stars for this criteria. Amart All Sports received four stars, followed by Athlete’s Foot, Rebel Sport and Foot Locker with three.
Range
While some retailers only stock popular shoe brands like Nike, Reebok and Asics; others also stock niche or specialist brands. Athlete’s Foot customers were most satisfied with their retailers range, followed by Amart All Sports and Rebel Sport with four stars each, and Paul’s Warehouse and Foot Locker with three.
Service
Buying the right shoes can be tricky without the help of experienced staff members. Once again, Athlete’s Foot came out ahead with five stars for service; followed by four star recipients Amart All Sport, Rebel Sport and Foot Locker. Paul’s Warehouse received three stars for this criteria.
Accessories
Rebel Sport and Athlete’s Foot customers were most satisfied that their retailer provided a five star range of accessories. Amart All Sport received four stars for this category, followed by Paul’s Warehouse and Foot Locker with three.
