One in five Aussies has turned to tinned food in the past twelve months due to the rising costs of fruit and vegetables, according to a recent Canstar Blue survey.
Unsurprisingly, both Queensland and New South Wales (the two states hit by natural disasters) have higher rates of people turning to canned food at 20 and 22% respectively.
But those worst hit seem to be Generation Y respondents with one quarter of respondents turning to canned food.
Many Aussies are also steering clear of delivery costs, as only six percent have their food delivered to their homes in order to save time.
So with the cost of food fast becoming a crucial factor in choosing a supermarket, who wins the battle between the biggest brands? That accolade goes to ALDI, who have walked away with our most satisfied customers award for supermarkets.
ALDI beat out some sturdy competition: Coles, IGA and Woolworths.
Aussie ladies are doing the lion’s share of the grocery shopping while men are more likely to be shirking their household duty.
The margin is wide with a whopping 86% of female respondents being the primary grocery shopper in the house compared to only 67% of men, according to our new survey.
Even more impressive was that women were less likely to grumble about it, while men were more resentful of grocery shopping duties.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of supermarkets within the survey group. To qualify, the customer has to have made a purchase from a supermarket in the last six months.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Both ALDI and IGA came out ahead of Woolworths and Coles despite the latter stores having significantly more clout. ALDI received five stars for overall satisfaction, and IGA was close behind with four. Coles and Woolworths both received an admirable three stars for overall satisfaction.
Price
Once again, ALDI triumphs with a five star rating for price. IGA, Coles and Woolworths received three stars each for price.
Service
IGA has emerged the victor with a five star rating for service, but Coles and ALDI were not far off with four stars each. Woolworths came behind with three stars for service.
Product variety
It’s not a ‘super’ market without a suitable range of products to choose from, and Coles and Woolworths prove they’re super indeed with five stars each for product variety. IGA followed with four stars while ALDI received three.
Brand range
A wider range of brands means more choice for savvy shoppers. Woolworths received a five star rating for brand range, while both Coles and IGA received a four star rating for their range of brands, and ALDI received three.
Store layout
Store layout is crucial for customers on the move. Shoppers won’t need a map to navigate their local ALDI, with a five star rating for store layout. Coles, IGA and Woolworths all received four stars for their layout.
Specials
Specials entice shoppers into stores and encourage savings, so ALDI’s five star rating for specials is a big win. Coles and IGA both received four stars for their specials and Woolworths followed with three.
