Office printer brands rated in our 2014 results

Besides the all-important coffee machine, one of the most relied upon devices used in many offices around the country is the humble printer. In our latest results, we asked small business owners to review their printer purchase, so we could determine which brands were the real stand outs.

Epson stood out in these 2014 results, achieving our Most Satisfied Customers Award – Printers, Small Business ahead of Toshiba, Fuji Xerox, Canon, HP, and Brother.

Australian workers will be interested to know that Epson achieved five stars in many areas; such as reliability, value for money, features, and overall satisfaction. However, other reviewed brands weren’t far behind:

  • Toshiba finished with five stars for its printers’ compatibility with non-original cartridges,
  • Fuji Xerox achieved five stars for performance and reliability,
  • Canon took out a top rating for features, and
  • HP received five stars for value for money – a rating it shared with our award-winner.

Make sure you take a look at how each brand performed in the breakdown below.

Overall customer satisfaction

First in line for our five star rating for overall customer satisfaction was Epson, followed closely by Toshiba, Fuji Xerox, and Canon. Both HP and Brother received three stars for printer satisfaction.

Value for money

HP and Epson both finished with five stars for office printer value for money. Toshiba, Canon, and Brother all received four stars, and Fuji Xerox secured three.

Cost of ink cartridges

While making peace with the initial cost of your new printer may be one thing, coming to grips with the price of the ink cartridges is quite another. In fact, two thirds of respondents were careful to factor in the price of ink / toner replacements when considering which printer to purchase.

Of the brands rated, Toshiba stood in front with a three star rating for the cost of its ink cartridges. All other brands – Epson, Fuji Xerox, Canon, HP, and Brother – received two.

Performance and reliability

Whether you’re printing off important documents at the last minute for a meeting, or updating your restaurant’s menu, printer reliability is hugely important regardless. Both Epson and Fuji Xerox received five stars for performance, and were followed by four star achievers Canon and HP. Toshiba and Brother both received three stars in this area.

Printer features

A versatile business requires a printer that can handle multiple tasks; such as scanning, printing different sized pages, printing photos etc. Customers of both Epson and Canon were most satisfied with their printer’s range of features. Following these five star-awarded brands were four star recipients Toshiba and Fuji Xerox, then three star recipient Brother.

Compatibility with non-original cartridges

Fifteen percent of our survey respondents spend $100 or more on printing ink a month. With this in mind, it would be a smart move for businesses everywhere to ensure they’re utilising the cheapest and best printing cartridges available.

Toshiba finished with five stars in this area. Fuji Xerox weren’t far behind with four stars to its name; Epson, Canon, and Brother all received three, and HP finished with two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 855 small business owners and decision makers (i.e. the main decision maker for a small business) across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction with products and services related to their business. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who currently have an office printing device (including multifunction printers) that is used for work purposes – in this case, 749 small business owners/main decision makers.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
