Fact Checked Fact Checked

How we rate self-storage

Our review compares self-storage on customer satisfaction, so you can find out what other Aussies think about the compared brands before you go ahead with a purchase. Think of it as like asking hundreds of your closest mates which self-storage they think is best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 495 Australians for their feedback on self-storage service(s) they have used in the last two years.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their self-storage brand(s) from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:
  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a self-storage brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for money: price was reasonable for size and quality of the self-storage space.
  • Customer service:the staff managing the self-storage service were friendly, helpful and easy to contact.
  • Quality of storage: the self-storage unit was sufficiently maintained and secure (i.e. it was clean, dry, temperate and well secured.).
  • Accessibility: the self-storage unit was easy to get into and the service property had flexible access times.
  • Safety & security: the self-storage service provided adequate security options (i.e. surveillance, locks, codes, etc.).
  • Location:the location was easy to access and travel to from work or home.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Self-storage buying guide

What to look for in a self-storage provider

The first two things that come to mind when considering hiring self-storage are size and security. Look for providers that offer different-sized storage spaces to suit your needs, and the type of security guarantees they offer, like CCTV cameras, security alarms, pin codes, insurance protection, and so on. Cleanliness is also very important, as you don’t want your belongings being eaten away by pests or ruined by dust, for example, as this could void your contents insurance entirely for breach of reasonable care. Further down on the list should be good opening hours and year-round access, multiple storage options, and location.

Location was top-of-mind for respondents, with 40% said it was the main contributor for choosing a self-storage provider. Secondary to location was price with 21% saying it was their main reason and security coming in third with 15% saying it was the leading factor for choice.

How much does self-storage cost?

Our survey found that Australians are spending an average of $165 a month on self-storage facilities, up from $163 last year.
The amount you pay for self-storage can vary significantly depending on factors such as:

  • The size of storage unit you need: storage services offer multiple unit sizes from lockers, right through to large units, depending on what you want to store.
  • Your location: space will be at a premium in some areas of the country, meaning prices could be higher in certain areas. CBD locations are likely to cost more.
  • How long you need the unit for: you might find there are reduced rates on offer over the long term, with short-term arrangements more expensive.
  • Whatever your budget or reason for needing self-storage, it’s worth keeping an eye out for promotional offers, such as 50% off for your first month, for example. It’s very easy to just ‘set and forget’ with a service like self-storage, so be sure to shop around before signing up – and give serious thought to what you’ll be doing with your stored belongings in the long term.
