2017 award for self storage

Most Satisfied Customers | National Storage

In Canstar Blue’s inaugural customer ratings for self-storage services in Australia, National Storage has emerged on top with five stars on safety and security, location, accessibility, storage quality, customer service, value for money and overall satisfaction.

Aussies rate self-storage services

Your home may be your castle, but sometimes it just isn’t big enough! That’s where self-storage services come in handy because they can give you the space – and time – to decide what you’re going to do with all that stuff you no longer have enough room for. Maybe you’ve downsized to a smaller home, or inherited some old furniture from granny after she moved into a retirement village. Or maybe you’re moving overseas and need somewhere to store all your belongings?

Whatever your reason for needing a self-storage unit, you’ll want one that ticks all the boxes in terms of storage quality, safety and security, accessibility, and value for money, amongst other things. So where do you look? To help you in the process, Canstar Blue has conducted a review of self-storage services, asking Aussies about their experiences to form our customer ratings.

Three self-storage companies have featured in our inaugural review, with National Storage topping the customer satisfaction table with five stars in every category. Kennards finished second in the rankings with four stars overall, followed by Storage King on three stars.

The research identified value for money as being the greatest driver of customer satisfaction, which makes sense. After all, safely storing your items is a fairly straightforward service that you won’t want to pay too much for. Sure, other factors might be important to you, such as your unit having good lighting and other facilities. You’ll also want easy access to your space and helpful service if and when you need it. But when it comes to the bottom line, what can you expect to pay?

Self-storage prices

Australians are spending an average of $159 a month on self-storage facilities, our survey of customers found. Average spending in New South Wales and Victoria reached $162 and $163 respectively. Given that the average customer uses self-storage facilities for 16 months, total costs could reach as high as $2,600.

The amount you pay for self-storage can vary significantly depending on factors such as:

  • The size of storage unit you need: National Storage, for example, offers more than 20 individual unit sizes right through from lockers to large units depending on what you want to store.
  • Your location: Space will be at a premium in some areas of the country, meaning prices could be higher. CBD locations are likely to cost more.
  • How long you need the unit for: You might find there are reduced rates on offer over the long term, with short term arrangements more expensive.

Whatever your personal circumstances, it’s worth keeping an eye out for promotional offers, such as 50% off your first month’s price, for example.

It’s easy to ‘set and forget’ a service like self-storage, so be sure to give serious thought to what you’ll be doing with your stored belongings in the long-term. When it comes to finding the right temporary home for your things, we hope this review proves helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have used a self-storage service in the last 2 years – in this case, 347 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
