Australians seek chemical-free solution to a common task: hair washing

Our recent survey results show that one third of Australian shoppers choose a low or no chemical shampoo brand for their home.
This is particularly so in Western Australia – where 42% of respondents purchased chemical-free (or close to chemical-free) shampoo brands.
Furthermore, Aussie men were equally as likely as women to go the ‘green’ shampoo route.
With green beauty products in the forefront of many shoppers’ minds, it came as no surprise that locally owned, eco-friendly brand Natures Organics received our most satisfied customers award for shampoo.
Our survey also included hair care brands Garnier, L'Oréal, Dove, TRESemmé, Herbal Essences, Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Schwarzkopf, Palmolive and Sunsilk.
Australian brand Natures Organics – who market environmentally friendly household products - received five stars for overall customer satisfaction, value for money, effectiveness and consistency.
Herbal Essences scored a five star rating for their products’ fragrance.
Our survey results also showed that many respondents preferred to save money by purchasing low-price shampoo brands. Some age groups were more comfortable with spending less on hair care products, with 38% of Generation Y respondents being frugal with shampoo brands compared to 28% of Baby Boomers.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of shampoo within the survey group - in this case, 2,171 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased shampoo in the last 12 months. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall satisfaction
Natures Organics received five stars for their overall customer satisfaction, followed by four star winners Garnier, L'Oréal, Dove, TRESemmé, Herbal Essences, Pantene, Head & Shoulders and Schwarzkopf. Palmolive and Sunsilk both received three stars for overall satisfaction.
Value for money
Another five stars went to Natures Organics, was closely followed by Garnier, L'Oréal, Dove, TRESemmé, Herbal Essences with four stars each. Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Schwarzkopf, Palmolive and Sunsilk each received three stars for their value for money.
Effectiveness
A good shampoo should produce great results for every wash. Natures Organics had the most satisfied customers for effectiveness and received five stars for this criteria. Garnier, L'Oréal, Dove, TRESemmé, Herbal Essences, Pantene, Head & Shoulders and Schwarzkopf all received four stars for their product’s effectiveness, while Palmolive and Sunsilk took out three stars each for theirs.
Consistency
Natures Organics received five stars for the feel and consistency of their shampoo, followed by Garnier, L'Oréal, Dove, TRESemmé, Herbal Essences, Pantene, Head & Shoulders and Schwarzkopf with four stars each. Palmolive and Sunsilk received three stars each for this criteria.
Fragrance
Smelling like a flowery meadow is a tall order, but your chances might improve with Herbal Essences’ five star customer rated fragrance. Taking out four stars each were Natures Organics, Garnier, L'Oréal and Dove, while TRESemmé, Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Schwarzkopf, Palmolive and Sunsilk received three stars each.
