Fact Checked Fact Checked

Don’t spend another year with your head in the sand when it comes to your energy plan. Getting a better deal on your energy supply doesn’t have to be a difficult or daunting task. Provided you have confidence in yourself and what you’re saying and prepare properly in advance, you could cut your power bills significantly in a matter of minutes.

It’s one big game and Canstar Blue has some tips and tricks to help you play it. Keep reading to find out.

1. Check you are on your provider’s ‘best offer’

Ask for your provider’s CHEAPEST offer

Thanks to the Better Bills Guideline, it is now easier than ever to see if you are missing out on savings from your energy provider. All electricity providers across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory are now required to display a ‘best offer’ message on its power bills that highlight whether customers could be paying less on another of its plan, based on their past usage. Victorian energy providers implement a similar best offer messaging on bills for customers every three months for electricity customers and every four months for gas customers.

If you are looking to shave some money off your energy costs this new year, then your provider’s ‘best offer’ messaging could be a good place to start. You should be able to find this information on the first page of your most recent energy bill but if in doubt, you can always contact your energy retailer directly for more information.

2. Compare offers from other providers

If you find you are on your provider’s best offer then it might be time to start comparing offers from other providers for leverage in negotiations. This is where using sites like Canstar Blue can help. With our free comparison tool, you can compare electricity plans and costs in your area from a range of providers.

If you’re keen to stick with your current provider, it could be handy to determine how much you could save by switching and use this information to help you negotiate a better deal.

Alternatively, you may find more value in ditching your existing provider entirely and switching energy providers to cash in on the savings there.

3. Ask about backdating or extending a discount

If your negotiations prove successful and you do manage to score a new discount from your energy provider, it could pay to take that extra step and ask for it to be backdated or extended beyond the benefit period.

It’s perfectly reasonable to ask for the discount to be applied to at least your most recent bill.

4. Enquire about different energy tariffs

If you’ve exhausted all your options when it comes to your current energy plan, it may be worth asking your provider about some of the different tariffs available in your area as well.

An energy tariff refers to the way you are charged for your energy usage, such as a flat rate or flexible rate depending on the time of day you use your energy. Most households are likely to be on a single rate tariff, meaning they are charged the same rate for electricity, no matter the circumstances. However, other tariffs can be accessed depending on the type of electricity meter you have installed at your property.

For those households with a smart meter installed, it may be worth enquiring about the time of use or flexible pricing tariff rates available from your energy provider to make sure you aren’t potentially missing out on greater value there.

Keep in mind though, a flexible pricing tariff will only benefit those who take advantage of the cheaper usage times effectively – otherwise, you could be unknowingly signing yourself up for even more energy costs. So, be sure to look at the terms and conditions closely before making a purchase decision.

Although energy prices are continuing to rise, the energy market remains competitive and providers are keen to keep customers on board. It’s in the provider’s interest to retain customers even if it means you’re paying less than you were before. Keep this in mind when you negotiate a better deal and you just might get what you want.
