Who is United Petroleum

In 2015, United Petroleum won Canstar Blue’s award for customer satisfaction for their service stations – for the fifth year in a row! We take a look at why customers we surveyed are still so happy with their stores.

The people behind the pump

United Petroleum was founded in 1981 by South African-born entrepreneurs Avi Silver and Eddie Hirsch. It began as a group of service stations under the brands Astron and Esso. By 1990, they had 23 new sites operating under the Esso banner. In 1993, they changed their brand to United Petroleum.

United Petroleum is now one of the fastest-growing independent companies in Australia. As an independent Australian owned petrol and convenience company, United Petroleum offers more than just good prices nation-wide on quality fuel. They employ over 2,500 Australians.

How many United Petroleum service stations are there?

United Petroleum has over 320 service stations across Australia. You can search for your nearest station online.

Things you can buy at a United Petroleum station

United Petroleum has its own range of United Products including Sweeten Up confectionery, Drink Up water, and United brand sports balls. It has its own Café UP, accompanied by the more unconventional Tech UP section that sells phones and other electronic gadgets.

Their car wash facilities even come in two different shapes: the U Wash self-serve car wash and the Wash UP automated car wash.

Service stations we surveyed

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have refuelled a motor vehicle at a service station in the last month – in this case, 2,510 drivers.

The service station brands we surveyed are:

  • United Petroleum
  • BP
  • Caltex
  • Coles Express
  • Mobil 7-Eleven
  • Puma Energy
  • Shell
  • Caltex Woolworths
