What is Afterpay?
Afterpay is a service offered by a range of retailers, which allows you to purchase goods and pay in four easy, interest-free instalments. The first installment is generally paid at the time of purchase, while the remaining three payments are paid every fortnight. Afterpay sends out a schedule and reminder notifications, so that you don’t miss a payment, otherwise you’ll be hit with a late payment fee.
How does Afterpay work on Appliances Online?
- Add an appliance to your bag and proceed to checkout
- Select Afterpay as your payment method
- Enter your details with Afterpay
When you select the Afterpay payment option, you’ll need to make an account if you don’t already have one set up. For this you’ll need to reside in Australia, have an Australian debit or credit card, and be over 18 years of age. Once you’re approved (which is generally instant), your order is then shipped like any other. You can use Afterpay in store or online, plus there’s an app, allowing you to manage orders, make payments and find other retailers that offer this service.
A payment schedule is emailed to you once you complete your purchase. On Appliances Online, your first payment is taken at the time of purchase with the remaining three repayments needing to be paid over the next six weeks.
According to Appliances Online, once you’ve used Afterpay for at least six weeks, you can make the first payment within 14 days for all orders under $500, instead of at the time of purchase. The other repayments need to be made over the next eight weeks. There’s a $10 late payment fee with an additional $7 fee if the payment is still unpaid seven days later.

There are plenty of other retailers that offer this service, here are some of the major ones:

Should I buy an air conditioner on Afterpay?
Afterpay may be a viable option for those who prefer to pay in smaller installments instead of being hit with a huge bill upfront. However, Afterpay does charge fees for late payments, so you’ll need to make sure you keep up with your schedule.
Air conditioners aren’t cheap, so Afterpay might just give you that helping hand you’ve been needing, without taking a blow in the hip pocket. But before jumping into any purchase, make sure you do your research to find exactly the air conditioner unit you need for your household, so that you’re not left disappointed.
