Eight great microwave recipes

Microwaves are an essential appliance in our home. That’s the consensus of 86% of respondents to a recent Canstar Blue survey of more than 1,100 people. It’s a response that was pretty much consistent across the various states and various generations.

So, without further ado, here are eight great microwave recipes that the Canstar Blue team approves of.

Microwave mug cakeMicowave brownies

Mmm – chocolate brownies – what’s not to like about that? And if they can be made in the microwave? Even better! Here’s a great microwave chocolate brownie recipe from the Jamie Oliver site… although we recommend using glace cherries rather that sour cherries.

Chocolate mug cake for two

From Nigella Lawson’s website – although note it is a community recipe and not one of Ms Lawson’s own, is the deliciously-named chocolate mug cake for two. With instructions to “eat greedily with some cream or ice cream”, it’s a two-minute (or so) treat not to be missed.

Strawberry jam

Moving (reluctantly) away from chocolate, the Australian Women’s Weekly has a deceptively easy microwave recipe for strawberry jam. All you need is strawberries, lemon juice and sugar. And a microwave, of course. What more could you possibly want?

Savoury mince on toast

While we’re browsing the Australian Women’s Weekly, another staff microwave favourite is their recipe for savoury mince on toast. We’re heading into the cooler months, and this is a definite winter warm-up favourite. Sometime the old-style recipes are the best!

Omelette in a mug

Eggs can be a little bit temperamental in the microwave – certainly, don’t try microwaving a complete egg, shell and all. If you beat the eggs well beforehand though, an omelette is a quick and easy microwave meal. Here’s a microwave omelette recipe, although really you can make it with whatever ingredients take your fancy.

Minestrone soupMinestrone soup

Realistically, there are many soups that can be made in a microwave. Here’s a great minestrone receipe though. Another staff favourite is tomato soup – although to be truly lazy you can simply buy tinned tomato soup and chop a few fresh tomatoes into it when heating. Then top with a dollop of cream and some fresh chives and no one will be any the wiser…

Honeyed Dutch carrots

So beautiful on the plate – and so easy! This is a delicious Julie Goodwin recipe and is a perfect side dish to brighten up a “meat and 3 veggies” dinner. Check out the honeyed dutch carrots microwave recipe here.

There are plenty of other things that can be cooked in a microwave – although there are also some things not to microwave. Sadly, 11% of the Canstar Blue survey respondents admitted to damaging or breaking a microwave by using it incorrectly. That’s not a statistic that you want to be a part of!
