The vacuum cleaner is an essential household appliance to help keep things clean and tidy. So much so that 98% of Australians have at least one vacuum cleaner ready to go, based on a Canstar Blue survey which was conducted in 2013.
In the last two years, 38% of respondents claim to have purchased a new vacuum cleaner:
- 6% had not owned one before,
- 7% were purchasing an additional unit for their home and
- 25% purchased a unit as a replacement.
This was the highest rate of new purchases (edging out microwaves at 28%) amongst the eight major household appliances which were included in the study. Furthermore, 43% of respondents from Gen X purchased a new vacuum cleaner in the last two years, which was the highest of all the different age groups.
In terms of future intentions, 21% of survey respondents intend to buy a new vacuum cleaner within the next two years. This comprised 4% for a new vacuum cleaner (i.e. do not currently have one), 3% for an additional unit and 15% for a replacement. Again, this was the highest rate of new purchases amongst the eight major appliances, slightly ahead of microwaves and refrigerators (both 20%). Most likely to be in the market are Gen Y’s, with 29% considering a new vacuum cleaner.
These results are based on a nationally representative sample of 2,502 Australians who were surveyed by Colmar Brunton in 2013 about appliances ownership and usage in their household.
