Resourceful Australians utilise dishwashing liquid for other tasks

Most Satisfied Customers - Dishwashing Cleaners 2013While most Australians use their dishwashing liquid in a conventional manner, two in five respondents to our recent survey get the most from their purchase by cleaning items and surfaces other than dishes.

Of these respondents, dishwasher liquid is used by:

  • 81% to clean kitchen benches,
  • 25% to clean floors, and (most interestingly)
  • 20% to clean cars.

Reader’s Digest have suggested several ways dishwashing liquid can be used for purposes other than cleaning dirty dishes – such as a weed-killer, or cleaning agent for air conditioners.

This survey also highlighted some of the dishwashing habits of Australians. For example, Baby Boomer respondents spend an average of 17 minutes each day washing dishes. However, younger respondents from Generation X and Y take a little longer: between 19-20 minutes.

Dishwashers aren’t the ‘magic bullet’ solution for cleaning either. More than half our respondents own a dishwasher, but choose to hand wash some of their dishes anyway.

Earth Choice earn inaugural customer satisfaction award for dishwashing liquids

With an effective detergent brand at your disposal, washing dishes doesn’t necessarily need to be a chore. Our latest ratings compared eight well-known cleaning brands against each other, with Earth Choice receiving our Most Satisfied Customers Award – Dishwashing Liquids, 2013.

Earth Choice led with five star ratings for effectiveness, environmental friendliness, smell and overall satisfaction. It’s worth noting they also received a customer satisfaction award in our laundry liquids category earlier this year. ALDI brand, Fairy, Morning Fresh, Trix, Palmolive, Coles and Woolworths brands were also rated in this category.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased dishwashing liquid in the last three months – in this case, 1,990 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.

Overall customer satisfaction

Earth Choice achieved five stars for overall customer satisfaction for this category, coming out ahead of four star-rated Fairy, Morning Fresh, ALDI brands, Trix and Palmolive. Coles and Woolworths dishwashing liquid brands each received three stars for overall satisfaction.

Value for money

ALDI customers were most satisfied with the value for money of their dishwashing liquid. ALDI brands received five stars for value for money; Earth Choice, Trix, Coles and Woolworths brands each received four, and Fairy, Morning Fresh and Palmolive all finished with three.


If you’ve had a particularly messy dinner party or BBQ, you’ll need the aid of a detergent brand that’s tough on grit and grime. Customers have plenty of options, with Earth Choice, Fairy and Morning Fresh each receiving five stars for detergent effectiveness. ALDI brands, Trix and Palmolive all finished with four, and Coles and Woolworths brands received three apiece.

Environmental friendliness

Having received similar accolades in many other Canstar Blue ratings, it will come as no surprise that Earth Choice received five stars for environmental friendliness in this category. ALDI brands, Fairy, Morning Fresh and Trix each received four stars in this area, and Palmolive, Coles and Woolworths brands all finished with three.
