Fernwood achieves our gym member satisfaction award for 2014

Most Satisfied Customers 2014 - GymsOur annual gym ratings showcase brands that everyday Australians are most satisfied with, and this year Fernwood health clubs proved most fit for five star greatness.

Congratulations to the Australian owned brand for achieving our award for Most Satisfied Customers – Gyms, 2014. Notably, Fernwood achieved top ratings in several key areas:

  • equipment and facilities,
  • group fitness options (i.e. classes),
  • the availability of its staff, and
  • social atmosphere.

The final five star rating is perhaps the least surprising, given the female-only gym prides itself on building a strong sense of community within a safe environment. This is apparently how the gym franchise was envisioned when it was opened 25 years ago in Victoria.

While Fernwood thrived in these ratings, so did other rated brands. Snap Fitness received five stars for value for money, Anytime Fitness (appropriately) received five stars for its access / opening hours, and Jetts – a multiple Canstar Blue award winner – achieved five stars for its gym membership flexibility.

Goodlife, Genesis, and Fitness First were also rated in this survey.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who regularly visit a commercial gym that is part of a chain (i.e. has gyms in multiple locations), where they pay a membership / attendance fee (i.e. not a free gym) – in this case, 866 Australian gym members.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.

Overall customer satisfaction

Fernwood achieved an impressive five stars for overall customer satisfaction. Snap Fitness, Jetts, and Anytime Fitness all achieved four stars in this category, and Goodlife, Genesis, and Fitness First finished with three.

Value for money

The average cost of going to a gym is $76 a month, and members will want to get the greatest benefit for the money they pay. Snap Fitness received five stars for its gym membership value for money, and was followed closely by Jetts with four. Next with three stars each was Anytime Fitness, Fernwood, Goodlife, and Fitness First, and then two star recipient Genesis.

Access (i.e. opening hours)

Early risers may prefer to get their workouts done before the sun rises, but others may elect to exercise after work instead. Nowadays, most gyms cater to all kinds, sporting flexible hours and top end security. Anytime Fitness lived up to its name and received five stars for the level of access its members had to facilities, equipment, trainers etc. Jetts and Snap Fitness came next with four stars each, and Fernwood, Fitness First, Goodlife and Genesis all finished with three.

Equipment and facilities

Some gym junkies are all about weights, while others can’t wait to get onto the treadmill for some cardio. Happily, gyms are holistic about exercise, and make sure that there’s equipment for every kind of fitness freak or average Joe. Fernwood customers were most satisfied with the equipment and facilities available in their local gym. Hot on this winning brand’s heels were Snap Fitness, Jetts, Anytime Fitness, Fitness First and Genesis with four stars each. Goodlife received three stars for equipment and facilities.

Flexibility of membership (e.g. starting and stopping, use away from home gym)

A flexible gym membership means all the features you want from a health club at your convenience. Jetts achieved five stars for the flexibility of its membership, and was followed by four star recipients Snap Fitness, Fernwood, and Anytime Fitness. Goodlife and Fitness First came next with three stars each, and Genesis finished with two.

Group fitness

Zumba, Yoga, Spin, and Pilates are just some of the great classes you can partake in to build up physical fitness in different areas. Furthermore, some people find it easier to build confidence if they’re doing so alongside others at a similar fitness level.

Fernwood offers everything from boot camps to Yoga. Customers of this health club were most satisfied overall with the group fitness options available to them, which earned the brand five stars. Goodlife, Genesis, and Fitness First all achieved four stars for group fitness, and Snap Fitness received three, and Anytime Fitness and Jetts both received two.

Staff availability

Struggling with dead lifts? Need a spot? Have a question about billing? Readily available staff means you can get the most from your workout, and your membership. Fernwood received five stars in this area; Jetts, Goodlife, Snap Fitness, and Fitness First received four, and both Genesis and Anytime Fitness received three.

Social atmosphere

The encouragement of others can really help you reach new heights when working out – whether it’s from other gym members, or staff. Fernwood customers were most satisfied with the atmosphere of inclusion and community their health club fostered. This brand received five stars, and was followed by a host of four star recipients: Snap Fitness, Jetts, Goodlife, Anytime Fitness, Fitness First, and Genesis.
