Berocca is a brand from the Bayer Group – a multinational pharmaceutical company, which specialises in a number of consumer and pet health products. Berocca claims on its website that its daily Performance multivitamin may help to enhance mental and physical performance, and is a “healthy way to get more out of every day”.
Berocca rated No.1 for supplement satisfaction
Busy lifestyles mean it’s often difficult to eat and drink all of the essential vitamins and minerals you need for a healthy, balanced diet. That’s why many Australians turn to multivitamins to fill the gap. Other people, of course, take them under the advice of health professionals, especially if they have a particular vitamin deficiency.
Expert opinion is divided over whether or not multivitamins provide any significant benefit to those taking them. But our survey of 1,530 consumers found that the majority believe they do have some benefit – at least to them personally. Seven out of ten (71%) respondents told us they are convinced that multivitamins work, while three-quarters (76%) said they feel better when they regularly take them. Interestingly this is a significant jump in the number of Aussies who believe multivitamins live up their claims. This time last year the number stood at 64%. The percentage of people who feel better they can take multivitamins has remained unchanged.
So which multivitamins do Australians rate highest? Respondents to our survey rated the brand they buy across a number of variables, including taste, ease of consumption and effectiveness. Seven household names featured in the rankings, but only Berocca achieved five-star reviews in the aforementioned categories, as well as overall customer satisfaction. Why do people buy multivitamins?
So why do Australians buy multivitamins in the first place? We found:
- 43% take them because of the perceived health benefits
- 23% take them in an effort to boost their energy
- 13% were prescribed to them buy health professionals
- 11% take them for their mental well-being
- 5% were recommended them by family or friends
- 5% are not sure why they take them
Young people aged 18-25 were found to be much more likely to take multivitamins because their family or friends suggested them (12%), and also most likely to admit they are not sure why they take them (8%). Older consumers – particularly those aged 70 and over – were more likely to take them due to the perceived health benefits (53%). This aged group was also most likely to have been recommended multivitamins by professionals (19%). Adults in their 40s, meanwhile, were found to be more likely to take them for an energy boost (30%) and for their mental well-being (15%).
Interestingly, men (49%) were more likely than women (39%) to take multivitamins because of the perceived health benefits. Women were also more likely to take them to improve their energy, or because of advice from a health professional.
What ingredients are in multivitamins?
It’s important to understand what ingredients are in multivitamins, to ensure you’re actually taking the correct supplements for your specific requirements. So what is actually in a ‘multi’? As the name suggests, a multivitamin is a supplement that contains multiple different minerals and vitamins. Ingredients will, naturally, vary between brands, but as a guide, Berocca lists the following active ingredients in its Performance products.
Each Berocca Performance tablet contains:
- Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin H
- Folic acid

Do multivitamins work?
The manufacturers of multivitamins will obviously stress that their products are effective, but many health professionals are less sure about their worth. A quick Google search will show you examples of studies that lean one way or the other, and you will soon get an idea for just how divisive multivitamins can be. 29% of our survey respondents indicated that they are not 100% sure of their benefits, but they take them anyway. Berocca claims on its website that its daily Performance multivitamin may help to enhance mental and physical performance, and is a “healthy way to get more out of every day”.

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and consumed multivitamins in the last 12 months – in this case, 1,530 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
