Manning Valley rated No.1 for Aussie eggs
There are lots of things to consider when it comes to buying eggs from your local supermarket, including whether you want to buy free range, or caged. The former will generally mean better quality, but at a higher price. For many consumers, it’s a price worth paying. However, many people still take the cheaper, caged option. We’re not here to judge consumers on their choice of eggs, but to report which brands are rated highest based on factors including size, freshness, taste and value for money.
Unfortunately the lines between free range and caged remain rather blurred, with consumers left to try and make sense of the situation. Our ratings include brands that sell both free range and caged eggs. If this is an important issue for you, be sure to research a brand before making a purchase decision.
As for our ratings, we sought the feedback of almost 2,000 Australian adults who have bought and eaten eggs from a supermarket or grocer in the last three months. Ten brands received the minimum sample size required to be included in the results, including the big supermarkets. So, which brands have rated well?
In our inaugural egg ratings in 2016, ALDI Lodge Farm was rated highest overall. However, this year ALDI has been replaced at the top of the satisfaction standings by Manning Valley Eggs. It achieved five star reviews on egg size, freshness, and overall satisfaction, while picking up four stars for taste and value for money.
ALDI again recorded top marks on value for money, along with Myrtle Creek, but Manning Valley was the standout brand overall.
Other notable results included:
- Five stars for Aussie Farmers Direct on taste – the only brand to score top marks in this area
- Five stars for Pace Farm on egg size – along with Manning Valley
Manning Valley claims that its egg production system “ensures a happy, healthy, free-ranging bird that consistently produces a complete quality nutritionally packaged egg”. The company says its only sells free range eggs, with a maximum one bird per square meter range area.
Manning Valley Eggs can be found at Coles, Woolworths and IGA.
Frequently asked questions
Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have bought and eaten eggs from a supermarket or grocer in the last 3 months – in this case, 1,971 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
