ALDI washes up five stars for laundry liquid
If you prefer using laundry liquid to laundry powder, it’s likely because you want a little extra from your detergent than just ‘clean clothes’. And that’s perfectly understandable. You’ll want your clothes and fabrics to feel and smell their best, but you’ll also be conscious of paying more for the pleasure. Laundry liquid is generally more expensive than laundry powder, so it pays to shop around for the best brand for your needs. Our 2017 survey of laundry liquid-lovers found that 56% always buy the same brand, while 37% tend to buy whichever happens to be cheapest or on special when they hit the supermarket. If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, then our customer review and ratings will be able to help.
Once again we have surveyed more than 1,000 Australian consumers who have recently bought and used laundry liquid to find out how brands are rated based on their quality of cleaning, the feel of clothes after washing, scent, packaging (i.e. ease of use), environmental friendliness and value for money. Most importantly of all though, we ask survey respondents to rate their brand of choice based on their overall satisfaction.
Eight major brands have featured in our 2017 review, including two from discount supermarket chain ALDI. Brands must receive a minimum of 30 responses to be included in the ratings, so if your favourite isn’t listed, that will be the reason. So, which brands are scrubbing up best when it comes to laundry liquid?
Top-rated laundry liquid in Australia
For the second year in a row, ALDI Trimat has topped our customer ratings for laundry liquids. It received five-star reviews for packaging, scent, value for money and overall satisfaction. It was four stars overall for ALDI Almat, Biozet Attack, Earth Choice and OMO, while three stars went to Cold Power, Dynamo and Radiant.
ALDI has enjoyed great success in our customer ratings for laundry liquids, laundry powders and fabric softeners in recent years, seemingly striking the perfect balance between product quality and price. At the time of writing, ALDI Trimat (1L) costs $3.99. This compares to Surf (1L) $4.99, Earth Choice (1L) $7.19 and Cold Power (1L) $10, for example (Prices from Woolworths online May 2017).
Other notable results from our 2017 review were:

It’s interesting to note that five-star reviews were in fairly short supply, suggesting that those who buy laundry liquid have high expectations that are not always met.
What drives customer satisfaction in laundry liquid?
As well as revealing which laundry liquid brands are rated highest by consumers, our research also identifies what drives overall customer satisfaction:
- Quality of clean: 36%
- Feel of cloths after washing: 28%
- Value for money: 16%
- Packaging design (ease of use): 11%
- Scent: 7%
- Environmental friendliness: 2%
While similar to the drivers of overall customer satisfaction for laundry powder, consumers who opt for laundry liquid are noticeably more concerned with how their clothes feel after washing and slightly less worried about getting value for money.
Nevertheless, if you don’t think your laundry liquid is delivering on its promises, it could be time to shop around. Our survey found that Australians are spending an average of $19 a month on laundry liquid, so consider our ratings and whether or not you could be getting a better deal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have bought and used laundry liquid in the last 3 months – in this case, 1,034 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
