Fairy shines in latest dishwasher detergent review

Waking up to clean dishes can often be something that we take for granted, with our dishwashers – and the detergent that we use – a blessing for busy households and lazy bachelors everywhere. However, if your detergent doesn’t do the job properly, you’re quickly left with a big pile of dirty plates and cutlery, which is the last thing you’ll want to do after dinner, or in the morning.

Finding a detergent you can rely on can be a struggle, especially when every brand in the supermarket seems to claim more or less the same sparkling finish. As a result, choosing one to put in your shopping trolley becomes a big decision. In our survey, asking more than 1,500 Australians about their dishwasher detergent of choice, Canstar Blue found that 71% of respondents have used more than one type to find one that works best, meaning you’re not alone if you’ve switched things up in search of better quality or value.

If you’re not sure which dishwasher detergents are worth a try, our 2018 ratings saw eight major brands listed in the following order for overall customer satisfaction:

  • 1st Fairy
  • 2nd ALDI Logix
  • 3rd Earth Choice
  • 4th Finish
  • 5th Morning Fresh
  • 6th Woolworths Select
  • 7th Coles
  • 8th Coles Ultra

Final product (30%), ease of use (21%) and effectiveness (21%) were the greatest drivers of satisfaction for consumers, the survey found, with value for money (17%), scent (8%) and environmental friendliness (3%) less of a priority for most. So where can you strike the best balance between quality and price? This year, Fairy has emerged top of the tree.

Read on to learn more about the eight brands in our latest review.

The Powerball range is arguably Finish’s flagship product, available in Fresh Scent and Ultra-degreaser with Lemon Scent.

Which dishwasher detergent should I buy?

Dishwasher detergent can be a tricky purchase, especially if it’s your first time down the detergent aisle, or you’re under pressure to have clean plates and utensils for that special dinner. With a wall of options to navigate, finding one that does the job everytime can quickly become an exhaustive search.

57% of Aussies always buy the same brand of dishwasher detergent, our latest survey found, with the majority of these consumers choosing the same brand due to how well it does the job. Overall, 39% of consumers base their decision on price – going for whichever detergent happens to be cheapest.

Which dishwasher detergent you choose to buy and use will be based on personal preference, including how often you’re using your dishwasher, your budget, and how environmentally-conscious you are.

While it might not be a weekly purchase for most households, buying dishwasher detergent can quickly become a noticeable expense, so it might pay off in the long run to do your research into which brand and product may be the best option for you. With plenty of brands to choose from, as well as the option to choose between tablets and powders, keep our customer ratings in mind the next time you head out for a big shop.

Dishwasher Reviews & Ratings

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue surveyed 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and used detergent (tablets, liquid, gel, powder) for their dishwasher in the last six months – in this case, 1,520 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
