Dodo and Commander slash energy prices in NSW

Two smaller energy providers have slashed their electricity prices in New South Wales in a clear sign of competition heating up.

Dodo and Commander’s plans are now some of the cheapest in the state, thanks to significant decreases in electricity usage charges – the costs a household pays for consuming power.

The plans have no discounts or bill credits, only low variable rates which now boast a generous 18% off the Reference Price on the Ausgrid network in Sydney.

At a time when smaller power companies are coming to the fore, Dodo and Commander’s rate changes mean new customers could save $261 a year compared to the Reference Price for the Ausgrid distribution area.

Canstar Blue Editor-in-Chief, Simon Downes, said frequent price movements in the market have led to many customers actively seeking out better energy deals.

“The eastern states of Australia have experienced significant price changes so far in 2020, many of which have put smaller brands like Commander and Dodo on the map,” he said.

Mr Downes also reiterated the importance of comparing the rates of energy plans, which are the charges found on a power bill for the usage and supply of electricity.

“Before signing up to a new plan, every customer should go over the base rates with a fine-tooth comb. It’s these costs that will ultimately determine how much a household will pay for energy. For larger households, usage charges will likely account for the biggest portion of a bill, while customers who use less power should keep a close eye on supply charges.

“Changes to the base rates of energy plans have marked a trend from retailers this past month, however we’re not used to seeing them go down by such a large amount, which is what makes Commander and Dodo’s new offers so noteworthy.”

Commander and Dodo are both owned by Australian telecommunications giant, Vocus Group, which also own telco brand iPrimus.

Existing customers on these plans will not automatically receive the new lower prices. Customers will need to contact Commander or Dodo respectively for further information.
