Just a few days ago, Cabury’s limited edition ‘Caramilk’ blocks were selling like hot cakes, but they are now being recalled after it was revealed that some bars may contain plastic.
The affected batches will be dated best before 17th or 21st of January 2019.
Consumers are being urged to return the chocolate blocks to where they were purchased from for a full refund. No proof-of-purchase will be needed.
The “small, flexible pieces of food grade plastic” discovered in the chocolate may cause minor injury if consumed, the ACCC says. The contamination is being blamed on a machinery fault.
“Our analysis of the samples received to date has determined that this product does not appear to pose a serious health or food safety risk, but a recall has been initiated to prevent the risk of minor injury,” a spokesman for Mondelez International, the parent company for Cadbury, told the ABC.

Why all the fuss?
The Caramilk chocolate has proved extremely popular with consumers. With its limited stock and high demand, blocks are being sold on eBay for way more than their recommended retail price.
Caramilk was first introduced in New Zealand in 1994 but was discontinued soon after. When Caramilk was brought back in New Zealand last year, Australians were spending up to $30 a block to get their hands on it, reported the New Zealand Herald.
In Australia, Caramilk’s 190-gram blocks have been available for sale in Coles, Woolworths and IGAs in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Independent retails across Victoria have also stocked the product.
