Coles has extended its offer of free reusable bags, but has not specified an extension date.
Coles supermarkets will continue to provide complimentary reusable carrier bags in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, and is investing in customer service to help make the transition away from single-use plastic bags as “easy as possible” for customers.
Coles also says it’s investing in thousands of additional hours of customer service for the busy back-to-school period, as well as providing refresher training for staff on the best way to pack reusable bags of various sizes and shapes amidst complaints in this area.
“We’ve been delighted with the level of support we have received from the community and thank our customers, and our team members, for helping us make the transition away from single-use plastic bags,” Coles said in a statement.
“Since we removed single-use plastic bags from our stores, customers have told us that this has been a big change for them, so we want to do everything we can to help them.
“We are encouraging customers to bring their own reusable bags when shopping, but for a limited time if you forget your reusable bags we’ll provide complimentary reusable Coles Better Bags at every Coles and at Coles Online in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Excludes Coles Express.
“We are already finding that customers who have received complimentary Coles Better Bags or bought one of our poplar Community Bags are getting into the routine of bringing these bags back, but some customers are still occasionally finding themselves a bag or two short for their entire shop.”
Coles stopped handing out single-use plastic bags from July 1. Woolworths banned the bags on June 20 and has also been giving out free reusable bags.

What are your bag options?
The Coles 15 cent Better Bag is made from 80 per cent recycled material and is bigger, thicker and more durable than single-use plastic bags. Better Bags can be used multiple times and when customers have finished with their Better Bag, it can be recycled through REDcycle bins at all Coles supermarkets.
Coles also offers a range of more durable reusable bags – designed by Australian school children – available for purchase starting at $1. A portion of proceeds are donated to charity partners including SecondBite, Guide Dogs, Little Athletics and Clean Up Australia. The range includes a shoulder bag, a chiller bag, a tote and a jute bag.
These reusable bags are stated to be made from a range of materials, including cotton/jute, polypropylene and LDPE/LLDPE. All of these bags, except for the chiller bag and jute bag, can be recycled through the REDcycle program.
