Pharmacies are no longer just places to pick up your prescriptions – they now sell all kinds of daily essentials and not-so-essentials to keep your body in tip-top shape.

However, they don’t all take the same approach. Some focus on a wide range of beauty products, while others focus on providing more health services. You might be surprised by what your local chemist has to offer – and which local chemists you’ve overlooked.

Read on to discover the major names in your local pharmacy options, and find out which is best for your needs, whatever they may be.

Amcal

Since beginning in the 1930s as Allied Master Chemists of Australia Limited (A.M.C.A.L), Amcal is now part of the largest network of pharmacies in the country. Amcal has more than 230 locations across every state and territory. Services available include Doctors on Demand (an online prescription delivery service), click and collect ordering, and a long list of pharmacist consultation services from allergies to wound care, all for no charge. Amcal also offers the ‘Be Good To Yourself Program’ weight loss products and planning services, including assistance with meal planning and exercise. The ‘Be Good To Yourself’ weight loss products include bars, shake mix, ready-to-drink shakes, and ‘carbo blocks’.

Students can pick up a 10% discount through Amcal’s UNiDAYS partnership, while all customers can collect points that can be redeemed for cash discounts through Amcal’s loyalty program. Members earn 5 points for every dollar spent (online or in-store), and after accumulating 500 points you’ll receive a $5 discount card – this works out to be the equivalent of a 5% discount. Amcal Rewards members also receive member only offers, competitions, and a $5 off voucher for their birthdays. Amcal partners with Carers Australia as well as supporting Cancer Council fundraising and awareness initiatives such as Pink Ribbon Day.

Blooms the Chemist

Not to be mistaken with your local florist, this booming pharmacy chain has over 80 stores across Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. Victorians have just one of these, while Canberra residents can pop over the ACT border into NSW’s Queanbeyan to visit a choice of two Blooms the Chemist stores. To make budgeting easier, Blooms offers a comprehensive list of discount prescriptions online so you don’t need to go in store to find prices. They also offer price matching on prescriptions.

Health services on offer include vaccinations and ‘Blooms HealthChecks’, a range of services targeted towards both pre-empting health issues as well as managing ongoing ones – you can use Blooms to check in to see whether you need to see a doctor, for example by getting regular blood pressure checks. Loyal customers can take advantage of the Blooms Rewards Card club – you’ll earn 1 point per dollar spent, with every 200 points returning a $10 voucher. Members also have access to special offers and competitions.

Chemist King

Launched in 2008, Chemist King takes a no-frills focus to offer consumers a large range of brand-name pharmacy, health, and beauty products at low prices. The stores are designed with wide aisles and deep shelves so that they can maximise value by buying in bulk from suppliers. There’s no online store, so you’ll need to visit one of the 15 stores found across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia (10 of the stores are found in SA alone).

Chemist Warehouse

From one shop in the outer Western suburbs of Melbourne opened 16 years ago, to having more than 400 stores across Australia, being Australia’s largest pharmacy retailer, and now a massive retailer to China, Chemist Warehouse’s success can be attributed to its low prices and huge range. The online store carries the full product range, with free shipping on orders over $99 or a flat $8.95 delivery fee. Chemist Warehouse also offers a price guarantee – if you can find the same item at a cheaper price in another Australian store, Chemist Warehouse will match the price plus 10% off the difference.

Discount Drug Stores

Starting in Sunnybank, Queensland in 2001, the single store has since expanded to more than130 nationwide, in every state and territory except for South Australia and the Northern Territory. The Australian-owned and operated brand claims to offer cheaper prices than other chemists, without compromising on service delivery in terms of both customer service and health advice. Its two main charity partners are Assistance Dogs Australia – Discount Drug Stores has so far sponsored six assistance dogs – and Free To Be, a child-centred community development program in Kolkata. They also sponsor a number of community fundraiser events, which have so far included research fundraising for multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and cerebral palsy.

Discount Drug Stores offers a long list of pharmacy health services, including pain management consultants (check the online schedule for your local store), absence from work certificates, midwife consultants, pathology, heart health assessments, naturopath, opioid substitution program, quit smoking support, weight management, and Doctors on Demand online prescription service, as well as many more services.

Guardian Pharmacy

Focussed on family health services and community engagement, Guardian Pharmacy’s key values are advice, trust, and care. As well as maintaining a charity partner relationship with Carers Australia, Guardian Pharmacies runs its Guardian Angel Knitting program for avid knitters to support people in need, giving hand-knitted toys, clothes, and blankets to hospitals and community care providers.

Pharmacy services on offer cover a huge range of health concerns and issues, including allergies, coeliac disease, dental, diabetes, energy, eyes, fertility, hair loss, incontinence, mother and baby care, stress, weight management, and many more. Guardian offers the Be Good To Yourself weight management program and products as well as Doctors on Demand prescription services.

Loyal customers can join the Guardian Club, to earn 1 point per dollar spent, with every 250 points returning a $5 off voucher. Member benefits also include access to special offers and competitions, and opportunities to earn bonus points. There are over 100 Guardian Pharmacy locations across every state and territory (except the Northern Territory).

My Chemist

Rather than a franchise, My Chemist is a group of independent pharmacies sharing a common philosophy – dedication to health solutions, advice, and information. Most of the 30 My Chemist member stores are found in Victoria, with a few in New South Wales and Tasmania as well. But if there isn’t a store near you, online orders are available – including prescription medications. Script posting is free, and shipping is free for orders over $99 and for all PBS subsidised prescriptions through Australia Post. Otherwise, a flat $8.95 delivery fee applies.

The product range covers pharmaceuticals through to natural remedies and supplements for everything from arthritis to athletes, as well as nutritional supplement, weight loss, baby care, and household products. The personal care range covers fragrance, haircare, cosmetics, and skincare.

Pharmacist Advice

As suggested by the name, Pharmacist Advice chemists are targeted towards ‘medical counselling’, to help people understand pharmaceuticals and their role in addressing their health concerns. The brand’s website also offers health tips for some of the most common health issues, as a handy starting point. All up there are over 60 locations across Australia, in all states but neither of the territories. Regular customers can take advantage of the Restore Rewards program to earn 1 point per dollar spent – after reaching 100 points these can be redeemed for a $5 discount off your next purchase. Members of the Pharmacist Advice Restore Rewards program also have access to exclusive member offers, competitions, and give-aways.

PharmaSave

Launched in 2009, PharmaSave values are described as ‘care, value, service’. While the business does not offer online shopping or a full product list, it does keep its website updated with the latest catalogue specials so you can keep an eye out for a bargain. Loyal customers can join the PharmaSave Loyalty Club to earn points – and you can check your account balance online. PharmaSave has over 100 locations along eastern Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria), in both metropolitan and rural regions. The company has a long association with charity ‘I Give a Buck’, which helps seriously ill and seriously disabled children across Australia, particularly those who are falling through the cracks in our health and welfare systems.

Priceline Pharmacy

One of the biggest pharmacy chains with over 400 stores nationwide, Priceline stands out for its particular focus on women. In addition to the expected pharmacy fare, Priceline offers a massive range of cosmetics, skincare, haircare, and other beauty supplies. Most of the range (excluding prescriptions and over-the-counter medications) can be purchased online, with a choice of regular delivery for $9.95 (or free for orders over $100), or express delivery for $14.95. Priceline’s website also has online beauty tutorials and health management tips and tools. Priceline even offers travel and accident insurance.

Loyal customers can sign up to the Priceline Sister Club, a tiered membership program based on points earned per quarter (one per dollar spent). Members can then receive quarterly discount rewards, plus birthday rewards, and other exclusive offers. The charity arm of the company, the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation, raises money to help fight back against serious illness through their charity partners – currently PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia), Children First Foundation, Look Good… Feel Better (Facing Cancer with Confidence), and Alzheimer’s Australia.

Soul Pattinson Chemist

One of the oldest names in Australian pharmacies, with the first opening in Sydney’s famous Pitt Street in 1872, Soul Pattinson Chemist is now part of API as a chemists’ cooperative. There are now just under 50 stores nationwide, mostly in Victoria and New South Wales, with a handful in Queensland and Western Australia and just one in Tasmania. Soul Pattinson’s own-branded product range is designed to cover the most important pharmaceutical needs while saving money when compared to branded alternatives. The Soul Pattinson brand covers a broad range of medicines, illness and injury management products, as well as preventative healthcare products, vitamins, and basic skincare. Members of the Soul +rewards program earn 1 point per dollar spent, receiving a $10 discount (excluding prescriptions) for every 200 points accumulated. Membership also includes access to special offers, competitions, and giveaways.

Terry White Chemmart

Two big name pharmacies (Terry White and Chemmart) merged in late 2016 to form Terry White Chemmart. The transition is still in progress, so you may be yet to see your local store switch over to the new branding. Together the two now encompass over 400 stores nationwide, in every state and territory. One of the most convenient services on offer is online video doctor appointments. For $49, you can consult with a doctor without needing to leave home. These doctors, in addition to medical advice, can dispense prescriptions and issue pathology requests and specialist referrals. The long list of specialist health consultants and programs available at Terry White Chemmart include hearing clinics, vaccinations (flu, MMR, and whooping cough), asthma support, baby clinics, heart health checks, sleep apnoea, bowel screening, and diabetes support. Terry White Chemmart is also the only pharmacy chain offering the Tony Ferguson weight management program and products.
