Adelaide Free WiFi Service by Internode
Reviewed by the Canstar Blue Judging Panel on .
Canstar Blue’s Innovation Excellence Awards for Telecommunications saw many outstanding new products and services presented to our judges, however there were just six winners decided upon. One of these winning services is the AdelaideFree WiFi Service by Internode, and it’s potentially the product offering that does the most good for the greatest number of all our entrants.
The AdelaideFree WiFi network was officially launched at the Adelaide Central Markets on the 25th of June 2014. This launch celebrated the work of Internode, in partnership with the Government of South Australia and the Adelaide City Council, in introducing a free, high-speed WiFi service to the people of Adelaide, changing their lives for the better.
Internode provided fibre-optic cabling which has enabled hundreds of high-performance outdoor WiFi access points. The expanded network provides free WiFi coverage for about 97% of the northern CBD from Wakefield and Gouger Streets to North Terrace. It also provides extensive external coverage for the southern half of the CBD.
It is incredibly easy to connect to the internet, particularly in community areas, cafes and restaurants.
In order to connect, you simply navigate through your settings menu and ensure your WiFi is turned on. Then select AdelaideFree from the WiFi networks list. Once connected, this network will be added to your preferred WiFi networks list. This means, next time, your device will automatically connect to AdelaideFree when you’re in range.
What a brilliant way to keep the people of Adelaide connected…no matter where they are! We applaud the city of Adelaide for providing such a vital service to its citizens – and notably to visitors – in such a simple to use way.
The Innovations Excellence Awards received many brilliant applications for products and services currently available in Australia that were launched within the last 18 months, with consumers also encouraged to nominate a product or service improving the way they communicate or stay connected. After a shortlisting process, the award winners were chosen by Canstar Blue’s expert judging panel, including external industry specialists. They were Joseph Hanlon, Editor of WhistleOut, and technology commentator, Trevor Long.

About our Innovation Awards
Our Innovation Excellence Awards have been determined through a panel of judges, who adhere to a strict awards methodology – outlined below. Brands or representatives of brands submitted products for consideration to us for judging.
We also accepted consumer submissions, where anyone in the public could submit products they thought were worthy of an Innovation Award. Each submission type was given equal weighting by our judges.
A single legitimate submission was all that was needed for a product to be considered by our panel, and only submitted products were assessed.
To be described as innovative, we assess both the degree of innovation and the overall impact the product could have. In terms of degree, we consider whether there are any other similar products available, whether it is a “first” in Australia or New Zealand and whether it opens up any new markets.
We also assess the potential significance of impacts to the existing market in terms of competition. And, of course, something that’s truly innovative can’t help but have that “wow” factor. In terms of overall impact, we consider the number of people who can benefit from the innovation, the ease and expense of application, and the potential to change people’s lives.
