Clear your calendars true-crime fans, Making a Murderer is returning to Netflix this October.

Whether you agree or disagree with it, the popular documentary series returns for its second season, with viewers being left to wonder what has been happening in the case of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for nearly three years.

When we last left them, Avery and Dassey had each been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 25-year-old Teresa Halbach, with the conviction and trial widely publicised due to both Avery’s past and the handling of the case by the police.

The 10-part series grabbed the attention of viewers, with the trial of both Avery and Dassey creating division not only within the small community of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, but all over the globe.

With the original documentary released back in December 2015, viewers have been eagerly awaiting the second installment, released globally on October 19.

According to Netflix, the new season will provide “an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, exploring the emotional toll the process takes on all involved”.

Executive Producers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have outlined what viewers can expect.

“Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2 we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit.”

Viewers can also expect a new attorney for the convicted Avery, with Kathleen Zellner – known for overturning high-profile convictions – quoted as saying that she only has one goal, to “overturn the conviction of Steven Avery”.

While the whole first season was released at the same time – with each episode lasting between 47 and 66 minutes – there is no word yet as to whether viewers will have to wait for each individual episode, or if the whole second season can be binged in one sitting.

Whatever the case, the Netflix trailer will have fans of the documentary hooked from the get-go.

The Plot Thickens

With true crime dramas proving so popular on Netflix, a spin-off documentary to Making a Murderer is also in the works, with filmmaker Shawn Rech said to be producing ‘Convicting a Murderer’.

“When ‘Making a Murderer’ was produced, many on the law enforcement side of the story could not, would not, participate in the series,” Rech said. “This docu-series will examine the case and the allegations of police wrongdoing from a broader perspective. It will also share with viewers the traumatic effects of being found guilty and vilified in the court of public opinion.”

No release date has been given for the spin-off series.
