Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) is an MA15+ Western-styled action-adventure game developed and released by the gaming giants Rockstar Games in late 2018. It’s attention to detail with high quality graphics and easy to play controls makes it one of the hottest games of the holiday season for Xbox and PlayStation lovers everywhere, writes Tom Doyle.
With the storyline being set in North America, 1899, you follow leader Dutch Van der Linde and his gang on an escapade of daring robberies and evasion of the law as they fight, steal and run (or gallop) across the rugged heartland of America trying to survive.
It’s not all about the perils and dangerous situations that outlaws are subject to in RDR2 though, as there are many other aspects of the storyline which sparks creativity and subsequently adds more variety and character to the video game.
Here is the game trailer, which provides a brief overview on the plot and the various activities you can get up to.
When it comes to variety and character, an example includes the 200+ species of diverse animals living and growing seamlessly throughout the gaming experience, as you can choose to free-roam and either observe and learn or hunt these animals, ranging from vicious grizzly bears and swamp alligators to cute harmless rabbits and fish.
But there is a breed of animals for neither purpose – horses. Horses are utilised in this game purely for transport and carrying supplies, as the way you treat your stallion determines it’s speed/handling stats and loyalty towards its owner (you).
The following video provides both experienced and novice gamers tips and Easter eggs surrounding the game’s concept, which can help make your journey through the Wild Wild West easier and more fun!
The Honour Bar
A specific element of Red Dead Redemption 2 which gamers are thoroughly enjoying is how one’s actions towards society can change the way people view you on the game.
The Honour Bar is a meter which slides from left to right depending on the honourable or dishonourable activities you perform while on your travels. Each side of the bar is subject to its own benefits, as every gamer has the choice of treating people like the true outlaw they are or displaying kindness and helping strangers in need.
These actions have a butterfly-like effect on the game, as one thoughtful gesture could be the difference between a lady’s death stare or happy welcome to you as you enter her hometown.
Is it worth it?
With the exception of the somewhat annoying map and waypoint navigation system that RDR2 has in place to communicate the authenticity to players, it seems as if Rockstar Games has grown from their mistakes of the past.
RDR2 is a must for any teenager or oldie who loves action adventure games and enjoys an in-depth plot with meticulous turning points and detail. Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now at all participating retail stores, prices ranging from $69.99 to $99.99.
