Tangerine Home Wireless Broadband

Fact Checked Fact Checked

Home wireless broadband is a great replacement for ADSL internet or the NBN, depending on your lifestyle and location. An increasingly popular NBN alternative, home wireless connects you to your provider’s 3G, 4G or 5G network – depending on what your technology allows for, and what signals are in range – and doesn’t use any wired services to get you online.

Some brands have jumped at the opportunity to offer an NBN replacement, including the Optus network reseller Tangerine. Tangerine’s already known for having some of the best NBN prices and deals in the country, but how does its home wireless broadband offerings stack up? Find out in the article below.

How much does Tangerine home wireless broadband cost?

Tangerine’s home wireless broadband plans start at just $59.90 per month for 200GB of data, and go up to $89.90 per month for 1000GB of data. Two modems are available at the checkout, but are not necessary if you already have a compatible one.

All Tangerine home wireless plans come with a $10 monthly discount every month for the first six months, with no contracts and an instant setup – no wires are needed, just the modem and the SIM. You can buy a modem through Tangerine, or bring your own. These plans operate on the Optus 4G Plus network. If you’re interested in any of these plans, check them out in the table below.

What do you need for home wireless broadband?

Home wireless broadband requires a modem and a SIM card, with the SIM card provided by your chosen telco. The modem can also be from your chosen provider, but you can bring your own with some plans. You simply insert the SIM card into the modem and plug the modem in – after a short startup, it should be ready. Home wireless broadband isn’t really designed to be a portable internet solution like mobile broadband is, but it can go anywhere in your home where there’s a power socket, and you could theoretically even take it to a holiday house or hotel – as long as your provider has coverage in the area.

What network does Tangerine home wireless use?

Tangerine uses the Optus 4G Plus Network for its home wireless broadband plans. As Telstra, Optus and Vodafone own all the 4G, 5G and 3G networks in the country, smaller telcos ‘piggyback’ on this coverage when offering mobile data plans. This often means smaller providers get good enough coverage for standard home wireless, but may not have access to the entire network, especially if they’re a Telstra network reseller.

How fast is Tangerine home wireless broadband?

Operating on the Optus 4G Plus network, you can expect speeds of around 12Mbps, although real-world results vary. While 100Mbps download speeds are theoretically possible, it’s more realistic to expect speeds similar to the Basic NBN 12/1 speed (around 10-12Mbps) or Standard NBN 25/5 (up to 25Mbps), depending on the signal strength in your area.

Tangerine home wireless plans don’t yet include access to 5G network coverage. Optus’ 5G network is being rolled out around the country, capable of 1Gbps download speeds; but while Optus has confirmed that it will allow network resellers such as Tangerine to deliver 5G broadband plans, the tiny telco is yet to do so.

Optus offers 5G home broadband plans to customers in eligible areas, and Telstra is rolling out its own rival 5G wireless products. SpinTel also offers home wireless broadband on Optus’ 5G network.
