Your working from home checklist

Working from home can easily become a nightmare. You’re suddenly swamped with distractions in the place where you feel most comfortable, trying to get on with your work without the mindset of your workplace.

Everything happens at home. It’s where you wind down, eat, sleep, relax and see your family most often. Introducing work to the equation can easily make things cause an imbalance.

We’ve got some helpful advice for you when you’re working from home, to make sure you’re not likely to get distracted and most likely to get more done.

Make sure nothing can go wrong

The last thing you want to do when working from home is be stuck on a never ending call with a call centre operator over upgrading your internet speed so you can keep up with your workload.

That’s why you should take the time to review your internet plan. The last thing you want is a laggy connection while in a video conference with your colleagues.

We’ve put together a list of perfect working from home NBN plans here. Otherwise, here’s our top picks for NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans.

Create a sensible space for productive work

Setting up office in the dining room? Lounge room? You’re setting yourself on a course for distracting yourself big time.

What you need to do is create a space that mimics your mindset for when you’re in the office. Being at home, you’ve got landmines for this behaviour all around you – washing to do, clothes to sort and so on. You need to act like you’re at work to do work.

If you’ve got an office, that’s easy. Put yourself in there and remove any distractions like baskets of laundry from there. If you don’t have an office, treat a desk or table like it. As long as you’re removing yourself from the places of your outside-of-work life, you’ll remain productive.

It’s like walking into a room and immediately forgetting why you did that. If you create your own space for work, you’ll be set.

Set yourself appropriate breaks

The good thing about working from home during this pandemic is that there’s a guarantee of what you’ll be doing on your break – chilling at home!

But given the amount of distractions around you, and the lack of formalities that being in the office provides, you get some more breathing time. If there’s other people in the house, check in on them – less become an office-dwelling cave troll who only emerges for meals.

If you’ve got pets, they’re probably loving this time that you’re staying home! Give them an ear rub, don’t let them be ignored. They’d love to be sitting on your feet while you work.

Keep the kids distracted

The school holidays are coming up, and that means your bandwidth is going to be stretched, pandemic aside.

There’s tonnes of great content to catch on Disney+, but beyond that we’ve thrown together a huge article about some shows we think your kids would love.

It’s even got shows for the big kids. Here we’re big fans of The Mandalorian, the Disney+ exclusive Star Wars TV show. We think you’d love what it has to offer.

Don’t have a Disney+ account yet? There are two plan options to choose from – a monthly subscription at $8.99 per month, or prepay for a year at $89.99 and save on the monthly cost. Both plans include the same features, with unlimited downloads and the ability to stream on up to four screens at the same time. This table includes links to a referral partner.

Make sure you’re healthy in your home workspace

With gyms closed and social distancing recommended, it could be tough for you to get the right amount of exercise.

We’re here to help! We’ve put together some of the best workouts you can get from YouTube. Just make sure you create a space for this as well – you don’t want to knock over anything or break any valuables!

Keep in mind…

These are wild times! Most of us have never experienced something like this in our lives. If you’re falling behind with work, that’s okay! Don’t beat yourself up about it.
