NOTE: Boost Mobile no longer offers the International Roaming recharge (as of September 2020).

There’s good news for Aussies who like prepaid phone plans and travelling overseas – Boost Mobile has just launched a new prepaid roaming recharge! While many Australians are cancelling or postponing trips at the moment, travelling overseas is still a rite of passage, especially for young Aussies.

Boost Mobile-commissioned research found that, of young Australians between ages 16-34 years, over 59% use their mobile phones more while travelling overseas, with social media the main use for around 74% of respondents.

With that in mind, Boost Mobile’s new $60 International Roaming recharge is set to help travelling Aussies keep in touch with friends and family while travelling to 15 select countries (valid for 14 days). For this $60 recharge, you’ll receive 30 minutes of calls, 100 texts and 5GB of data to use in the following countries:

  • China
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Portugal
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • UK
  • USA

How do I get Boost Mobile International Roaming?

Well, first up, you’ll need an active Boost Mobile SIM card. To do this, you’ll need to sign up to any of Boost’s seven-day, 28-day or long-expiry prepaid plans. Prices start at $10 for a seven-day plan and go up to $300 for a 12-month plan.

All plans include unlimited standard national calls and SMS, with unlimited international call and text inclusions across all plans (countries included vary from plan to plan). You’ll also get data-free Apple Music streaming, and data inclusions from 3GB (on the seven-day plan) up to 240GB (on the $300 12-month plan). Boost also uses the full Telstra 3G and 4G network, so you’ll get the same great coverage throughout Australia.

Once you have a Boost Mobile SIM, simply buy an International Roaming recharge from Boost (keep in mind this recharge is only available online). You’ll have 14 days to use up your recharge, and if you wish to recharge while overseas, you can do so by dialling #111# from your phone. If you need more inclusions, you can also recharge twice on the same day, which will give you double the inclusions (60 mins calls, 200 SMS and 10GB data), all expiring 14-days later.

What other options do I have for global roaming?

While many telcos offer global roaming on plans, most telcos have roaming on a pay-as-you-go basis, which can be expensive if you use your phone while travelling overseas as you would use it in Australia, especially when using data.

Vodafone is perhaps the biggest name when it comes to affordable global roaming options, with its $5 Roaming for postpaid customers. You’ll be able to access your Vodafone plan’s normal talk, text, and data inclusions for an additional $5 per day (unlimited capped-speed data on Red Plus Plans is not included on $5 Roaming).
