Boost Mobile’s refurbished range includes iPhone, Samsung, and Google Pixel

Looking for a more affordable way to get your hands on an iPhone or high-end Samsung Galaxy? Leading prepaid telco Boost Mobile has announced a new phone partnership that aims to take the expense (and commitment!) out of buying big-name devices.

From today, Boost Mobile will offer a range of premium refurbished phones to buy upfront with no lock-in contract, including the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9+, and Google Pixel 2 XL. With prices beginning at just $249 outright for pre-loved iPhones, and $339 for Samsung phones, customers stand to save hundreds by opting for a refurbished device on a SIM-only prepaid plan.

Boost Mobile will be offering its new phone range in partnership with Alegre, a specialist Australian supplier of refurbished devices. The full list of available handsets and prices is below.

  • Apple iPhone SE: from $249
  • Apple iPhone 7: from $399
  • Apple iPhone 7+: from $549
  • Apple iPhone 8: from $659

  • Samsung Galaxy S9: from $579
  • Samsung Galaxy S9+: from $649

Most devices are available in a variety of storage sizes and colours, with larger-capacity models offered at a higher upfront price. Each device also comes with a bonus $30 Boost Mobile SIM card, or a $15 discount on a $150 12-month SIM.

Customers can either pay full price upfront, or make payments monthly via Zip Pay or Zip Money. Devices under $1,000 feature 0% interest with Zip Pay, but be aware that hefty interest rates may apply with Zip Money; both of these are ‘buy now, pay later’ options, so read the fine print carefully before you make a decision.

What is a ‘refurbished’ phone?

A ‘refurbished’ device is a pre-owned phone that’s received a ready-for-resale makeover. To be offered as a refurbished model, handsets must pass a tough 72-point inspection process to ensure a high standard of performance; overall, refurbished phones should work just as well as their brand-new counterparts. While there may be minor aesthetic issues, such as surface scruffs or scratches, Boost Mobile describes its device range as being in ‘excellent working condition’, and all phones are completely data-wiped before sale.

Refurbished phones will also come with a 12-month warranty courtesy of Alegre, which provides repair or replacement coverage in the event of major failures or issues with device quality. As with most warranties, this doesn’t include mishaps such as cracked screens, water damage, or unauthorised repairs.

In addition to the device itself, refurbished phones also come with a Boost Mobile SIM card and a USB charging cable (note that a wall charger is not included). At checkout, you have the choice of either a free $30 Boost Mobile SIM (featuring unlimited standard talk and text in Australia, 20GB of data per recharge, and a 28-day expiry), or an upgrade to Boost’s $150 12-month SIM.

If you do opt for a 12-month plan, you’ll pay a discounted price of $135 for your SIM, and receive unlimited standard talk and text in Australia, 80GB of data, plus unlimited standard international talk and text to 25 countries.

Boost Mobile Plans

To give you an idea of what to expect from Boost Mobile’s 28-day prepaid plans, we’ve listed them below. The following table shows a selection of published Boost Mobile plans on Canstar Blue’s database, listed in order of cost, from the lowest to highest and then by data allowance, largest to smallest. Use our comparison tool to see plans from a range of other providers. This is a selection of products with links to a referral partner.

How it works

Once your SIM is activated and your phone is up and running, you’re free to stick with your $30 or $150 prepaid plan, or switch to a different option after the expiry period. All Boost Mobile plans include unlimited data-free streaming from Apple Music (subscription not included), with 28-day plans also featuring the option of rolling over any unused data to the next month, provided you recharge before expiry. Plans also feature unlimited and/or capped standard international minutes to selected countries.

Currently, Boost Mobile is throwing in bonus data on 28-day plans of $30 and up: if you’re a new or migrating customer, you’ll automatically get an extra 15GB on your first three recharges. This offer applies to recharges made between now and 25 November, 2019, provided your first recharge is made by 2 September.

The telco is also changing its add-on data and call options. From today, a $5 add-on gives you an extra 1GB of data (up from 500MB), while the $15 add-on now includes 3GB. Customers opting for the $15 pack can now also use this credit to call international destinations not already included in their prepaid recharge.

Save money, stay flexible

Overall, if you’re wary of 12, 24, or 36-month phone contracts, but don’t want to spent $1000+ upfront on an unlocked smartphone, going refurbished may be a wallet-friendly alternative. While Boost Mobile’s new range doesn’t include cutting-edge 2018/2019 flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, Google Pixel 3, or iPhone Xs, there’s plenty of great pre-loved devices available for seriously discounted prices – making it an option to consider if you’re more concerned with function than fashion.

Refurbished phones are also a worthwhile solution for parents looking for a prepaid plan for kids or teens. As you’re buying upfront and pairing your device with a prepaid SIM-only plan, there’s plenty of flexibility, and there’s no risk of your child running up an unexpected postpaid phone bill.

If you’re looking for a compromise between brand-name phones and affordability, Boost Mobile’s new device range could hit that savings sweet spot.
