In a battle royale of Australia’s top telecommunications brands, the results are in!
In mid-2013, we surveyed 1,878 average consumers to find out which was their ‘top telco’. Australian telecoms juggernaut Telstra headed the list, and was followed by several prominent brands:
Our results showed that the older you are, the more likely you are to prefer Telstra. Conversely, Australia’s runner-up, Optus, became a more popular choice of provider as the age of respondents decreased.
So what sets Telstra apart? One important aspect could be age. While most of the above brands were founded in the last thirty years, Telstra has existed the longest – having traded under the name Telecom since the mid-1970s until the early 1990s. Interestingly, they were the first to launch a mobile phone in this country back in 1987: the Mitsubishi Walkabout TM.
Telstra presently enjoys a large subscriber base across the country, with 15.8 million Australians signed up to its mobile services alone as of April 2014*.
Despite being head and shoulders ahead when it comes to “favourite brands”, challenger brands have traditionally been the most likely to be well regarded by customers overall.
