Optus offering bonus data to mobile customers in light of COVID-19 virus

If you’re working remotely or self-isolating during the COVID-19 crisis, you’ll know how important it is to stay connected – and how quickly you can burn through mobile data when you’re stuck at home. Fortunately for Optus customers, the telco is offering a small show of support in the form of free additional data.

Optus has announced it will gift eligible mobile customers up to 20GB of bonus data this April, with extra gigabytes available for both postpaid and prepaid subscribers. If you’re on an eligible Optus postpaid plan, you’ll receive a one-off add-on of 20GB, while prepaid customers on recharges of $40 or more will receive 10GB.

Optus customers will be able to claim their bonus data via the My Optus app in April. Presumably, prepaid customers will need to purchase a recharge of $40 or more in April to qualify, while postpaid customers will be automatically eligible for their bonus.

Optus CEO: data ‘critical’ in unprecedented times

While it’s not a massive gesture, it’s something that may take a little extra pressure off customers who normally struggle to stay within their monthly data limit. For example, an extra 20GB covers at least 30 hours of standard definition video streaming, and anywhere from seven to 20 hours at high-definition, depending on the service.

“These are unprecedented times, and we want to help Australians who find themselves having to self-isolate or work from home to stay connected.” said Optus CEO designate Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.

“We understand how much it means to customers to stay connected with their colleagues, classmates, family and friends. Access to data is critical, so we are playing our part in helping the community with our additional data offer”.

Optus plans to provide more information on eligibility through its My Optus app by Friday, 20 March 2020. While other telcos haven’t yet announced similar offers, don’t be surprised if Telstra, Vodafone, or smaller providers eventually follow suit.

Optus plans compared

If you’re due for a smartphone upgrade, you may be considering making the switch to Optus. Bonus data aside, Optus offers a small but competitive range of postpaid plans, with prices beginning at $39 per month for 10GB of data, plus unlimited standard talk and text in Australia.

Phone payments are now separate from your mobile plan, so you’re not locked into a single plan option for the duration of your 12, 24, or 36-month phone repayment period. Optus plans also come with extras, such as included Optus Sport, data sharing, and unlimited international talk and text.
